The Second University of Naples was established in 1992, but includes the older School of Medicine of Naples, which actually is one of the oldest and most renowned Schools of Medicine in Italy and the one with a recognised expertise in Rheumatology and autoimmune systemic rheumatic diseases.
Professor Gabriele Valentini and his team have a recognised expertise (actually established by Prof. Mario Giordano who was Prof. Valentini’s mentor) in the management of patients with SSc, in the study of pathophysiology, clinical epidemiology and clinical and therapeutic aspects of this condition, particularly regarding cardiac involvement in SSc. The team has been a member of the American Scleroderma Clinical Trial Consortium from 1995 and has been one of the founding centers in the pan-European EUSTAR initiative. Professor Valentini has mainly devoted his scientific activity (129 publications in peer-reviewed journals) to different aspects of SSc including immune dysfunction, pathophysiology, epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects. As far as the specific WP is concerned, he has published several papers in pee-reviewed journals concerning both SSc cardiac disease and observational therapeutic studies on early diffuse cutaneous disease, ILD and ischemic DU.
