The aim of this workshop is to provide early career researchers, at doctoral and postdoctoral level, with practical insight and advice on publication strategies in the context of the competitive, internationalized world of academia. Representatives from international and academic publishing houses will be invited to the event together with academics with experience of publishing in Germany and internationally. Early career researchers will thus gain insights into the multiple stages involved in producing a successful publication record – from what makes a successful book proposal, through positioning research within academic disciplines and passing peer review, to finding a publisher and dealing with editors. The workshop is thus relevant to those seeking to produce a monograph, work as editors or contributors to edited volumes, or submit articles to leading peer-reviewed journals. It will also be fruitful for those thinking of a career outside academia in the world of publishing. The goal is to provide a broad spectrum of wisdom about the publishing world to help our target population achieve their publishing and career goals.


The first session of the workshop (13:00–16:15) will involve the invited speakers giving short impulse talks on selected subjects including writing successful book proposals, positioning research nationally and internationally, and working with/as editors as well as the challenges of understanding open access concerns. There will be Q&A sessions to each talk, as well as a broader discussion at the end of this session. Following a short break (16:15–16:30) the workshop will take on a “world café” format  (16:30–17:30) where the participants will split into smaller groups and can rotate between the speakers according to their interests in order to benefit from a more intimate conversation with the speakers and peers.


Following the workshop, there will be an accompanying round table discussion (18:00-20:00), involving the speakers from the workshop.  The round table provides a space to reflect upon earlier discussion and also address the present and future of publishing in a globalized academia.  The panel discussion will begin with each discussant summarizing the findings from the practice-oriented first part of the workshop (in 5-7 minutes).  After establishing common ground for the further discussion, speakers will be encouraged to address points brought up in the World Café to the larger forum.  Additionally it is our hope to showcase challenges associated with open access publishing along with the possibilities for translation, and crossovers between academic and popular science or academia and journalism.
