EOC Roundtable Series: ‘Pursuing an Academic Career in Germany’: Communication in German Academia

In summer term, the Equal Opportunities Committee organizes a series of roundtable discussions on “Pursuing an academic career in Germany”. The series is composed of three events, which will be bilingual and 100% virtual, and will offer the possibility of open exchange with experts and experienced researchers. The guests on the board will start with a short statement (5 to 10 minutes), and then the moderator will enhance a discussion between the members of the (virtual) board and very soon the whole group of participants. The aim is to offer a safe space for both speakers and participants to share and discuss their own experiences, questions, doubts and problems.

The first event on “Communication in German academia” is mostly directed at international doctoral students, though not exclusively. This session will address linguistic and pragmatic conventions and communicative hierarchies in German academia. Thanks to the speakers’ international backgrounds, they will be able to share and compare their own experiences in various environments and open a dialogue about German and international research practices. Their contributions aim at creating a space for exchange on the challenges of an international doctorate and career planning, where participants are welcome to join and contribute with their own personal stories.

• Prof. Dr. Ulrike Schröder is Professor for German language at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. She pursued her habilitation at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Her publications comprise many works on international communication, such as the edited volume on Intercultural Pragmatics and Cultural Linguistics (2020), and her monograph Brasilianische und deutsche Wirklichkeiten: Eine vergleichende Fallstudie zu kommunikativ erzeugten Sinnwelten (2003).
• Dr. Gabriela Marques-Schäfer is research assistant at the Institute for Romance Studies Institute at JLU. She is the president of the REBRALINT network (Brazilian-Germany Network for the Internationalization of Higher Education). She has taught German Language at the University of Rio De Janeiro, and she holds a Post-Doc position at the JLU.
• Dr. Kerstin Lundström is Director of the GGS. She pursued a double-degree doctorate at JLU and Stockholm University as a member of the PhDnet program. She worked as research assistant at the Institute of German Studies at Stockholm University. Her main research interests include rhetoric and communication theory.
