EOC Roundtable Series: ‘Pursuing an Academic Career in Germany’: Structures of German Academia after the PhD

The second roundtable discussion organized by the Equal Opportunities committee within the series “Pursuing an academic career in Germany” is dedicated to “Structures of German academia after the PhD”. Options of planning and pursuing an academic career as well as career management will be addressed from different angles. Topics, such as the sense and purpose of a postdoctoral qualification as well as different paths to the habilitation and professorship will be discussed. The speakers will also present and discuss possibilities of external funding during early stages of career, and the model of a research group leader as a qualification alternative to the habilitation. The discussion and exchange of experiences will not be restricted to German scholars and graduate students, but will also address the possibilities of international researchers who want to establish themselves in German academia.

• Prof. Dr. Bernadette Malinowski is Professor of Modern German Literature and Comparative Literature at the Chemnitz Technical University. She is member of the higher education council of the TU Chemnitz and is vice president of the council of the faculties of arts in Germany.
• Dr. Bienert is group manager of the humanities, social sciences, and cultural studies group of the ‘Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft’ (DFG).
• Prof. Dr. Greta Olson is Director of the American studies department and Professor of English and American Literary and Cultural Studies at JLU. She was Fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities ‘Law and Culture’ in Bonn (2014, 2016). She is a general editor of the European Journal of English Studies (EJES), and the co-founder of the European Network for Law and Literature.
