The benefits of an IPP membership

  • participate in the IPP’s curriculum and the GGK/GCSC study programme which consists of a wide range of courses tailored to suit your needs, including graduate colloquia, workshops, Masterclasses with top-ranking international scholars, as well as courses offered by the GGK/GCSC Career Services and the GCSC Teaching Centre.

  • apply for travel grants for research and conference trips, as well as financial support for the acquisition of competence in German up to the B1 level.

  • receive support and guidance in all matters relating to the PhD throughout your membership.

  • receive individual scholarship advice including feedback on drafts of your scholarship proposal and identification of appropriate opportunities.

  • benefit from excellent opportunities to gain conference, publishing and teaching experience.

  • pursue independent research in the GGK working groups.

  • rely on expert scholarship advice, helping you to secure funding for your postgraduate studies.

Applicants need to hold a university degree in literary or cultural studies with a G.P.A. well above average (international degrees must be equivalent to German 'Diplom', 'Magister', 'Master' or 'Erstes Staatsexamen' degrees).

Any postgraduate researcher in the faculty of Language, Literature and Culture may apply for membership in the IPP, as long as their research project is relevant to the IPP profile and they have not entered postgraduate studies more than one year prior to their application (exceptions are considered on a case-by-case basis).

The programme accommodates the departments of English and American Studies, German Studies, Romance Studies, Slavic Studies, Comparative Literary Studies, and Theatre Studies, among others. If your main subject does not appear on this list, please contact the IPP team ().

Admission is granted according to the academic record of the candidate, as well as the academic quality of their dissertation project and its compatibility with the IPP research profile. Furthermore, applicants must document proficiency in either German or English. You will find more information in the FAQs.

Members will be expected to have their first supervisor at Justus Liebig University. Usually, the supervisor is chosen shortly before or after admission.

Members will also need to register as postgraduate researchers at Justus Liebig University. Please note that, apart from an enrolment fee of approximately €270 per semester, there are no tuition fees at the JLU. The enrolment fee contains a number of benefits, such as free public transportation within the region.
