Student Research Assistant for Parents

Studying for a doctorate entails many ancillary tasks that can really add up – obtaining literature and making copies, for example. That's why we offer you the option of enlisting the help of a student assistant.

Logistical Support

The GCSC offers support with logistical problems you are faced with in your every-day life with children: We can help you to find an appropriate day-care and provide initial information concerning the financial support offered by the German government and bureaucratic steps surrounding pregnancy and birth.

Parents at the GCSC and GGK

Parents at GCSC and GGK gather once every year with their kids to share their experiences as parents and scholars. All PhD candidates who already are parents or who are thinking about becoming a parent are invited to join.

Child-friendly Work Place

If your child accompanies you to the GCSC we will be happy to supply you with a special parent's office equipped for your and your child's needs (such as toys and a cradle). You can find this office in the GCSC building, Otto-Behaghel-Str 12, Room 18 (ground floor).

Support for GCSC members

Extension of Grants and Memberships

We are happy to extend membership and scholarships for up to one year, amounting to a total of four years (informal request and your child's birth certificate are needed). If you are both a parent and in employment, please contact Lena.Nuechter to see if you would be eligible for further extensions, as these can be negotiated on a case-to-case basis.

Child-care

Furthermore the GCSC can provide on-site child care at large events if needed. If you are planning on bringing your child along, please contact us in advance.

For smaller events that do not take place at family friendly times or on other occasions – like your absence due to a research trip or during closure times of your regular child-care facility – that lead to an additional demand of child-care, which cannot be covered by your regular child-care arrangement (like daycare centre or school), you can apply for funding of the additional costs.

If you plan to conduct research abroad, or are invited to a conference and wish to bring your child(ren) along for the trip, we might be in a position to offer you financial assistance. You can apply to have your child's travel and care expenses covered; in the second case, a caretaker's travel expenses can be covered.

Support for GCSC scholarship holders

Financial Aid

Parents with children under 18 years of age who hold a GCSC grant get 400.- € per month for the first child in addition to the basic support and 100.- € per month for each additional child.
