Educational Governance

Mission Statement

The perspective of governance as a research approach primarily concentrates on relationships between society, the state and the market. In doing so, it takes into account the fact that the state no longer constitutes the sole regulating power in society. Instead, governance is understood through the multifaceted instances of interaction between the state, the market, and civil society. Even academic papers presented in education research in general and school and higher education research in particular are increasingly focusing on a governance perspective. The term “education governance” has therefore become a customary way of denoting this strand of research.

The section accommodates doctoral candidates who make explicit use of the educational governance perspective in their research. However, it is also intended for doctoral candidates dealing with issues (in the broadest sense) relating to control processes in education at the macro, meso and micro level.

Target Group

Talk by Catherine O'Brien (Cape Breton University, Canada) & Sean Murray for students and researchers at 12.11.2020, 4-6 pm about "Education for sustainable happiness and well-being".

Can we foster sustainable societies through learning about sustainable happiness? By integrating sustainability with lessons from positive psychology to foster sustainable lifestyles? How might sustainable happiness enhance education practice? Dr. Catherine O’Brien defined sustainable happiness as: “happiness that contributes to individual, community, or global well-being without exploiting other people, the environment or future generations.” She has taught sustainable happiness to undergraduate and graduate students in Canada for 10 years. She is the author of /Education for Sustainable Happiness and Well-Being/. Her recent work is a collaborative project with Sean Murray. They created the /Sustainable Happiness Semester/ journal for post-secondary students. The 100-day journal includes daily questions that focus on topics such as well-being, happiness, and sustainability. Each question is accompanied by either a brief overview of relevant research or a response to the question from an invited contributor.

Catherine and Sean will share their experience with applying sustainable happiness in various settings and introduce the /Sustainable Happiness Semester/ journal to a German audience for the first time!
