Overview

Spokesperson: Prof. Dr. Ulrike Weckel

This section combines research projects concerning the history of media, the communication and staging of history in mass media, as well as the impact and reception of media representations by the audience. The emphasis is put on interactivity, meaning that media history is pursued as (political) cultural history. Interrelations between the media and its perceptions by historical actors are at the center of interest. Topics of current and planned research projects are: (anti-)colonialism in film, the media's powerful depictions of violence, history in comics, the role of mass media in societal transformation processes, as well as images of the "Orient" and perceptions of Islam in the Western world, to name a few.
