Grenzen überwinden - Nähe erzeugen (Overcoming distance barriers by staying connected):             Digital togetherness in a migration society

Many people move from one place to another at least once in their life. The movement sometimes includes long distances, several borders and separation of families. However, family members, living separated by thousands of kilometers, often manage to stay in close contact with each other. As this was common before the internet’s invention, it became substantially easier with the help of digital media.

Media items like photographs, mobile phones, postcards, social networks, paintings etc. are meaningful elements in transnational families’ everyday lives. These objects bear family histories and experiences of different cultures. They represent an important part of past and present German migration, which until now has been neither profoundly documented nor systematically researched. We are collecting these objects and histories and will present them in a digital exhibition on our internet portal migr@com. People who lived or currently live far away from their families can use migr@com to share their experiences with others. We are constantly looking for new items and their histories, which illustrate how families cope with situations of separation due to migration. contact
