Leading Women in U.S. Business History and Present The U.S. still counts as the home of the stereotypical self-made man when it comes to business success and entrepreneurship. But where are the women in this story of America as economic superpower? Which businesses did they found and how? Which women left marks on management theory and practice? Who are the women that are considered ‘leaders’ in today’s business world? This lecture class traces the lives and careers of leading business women in the U.S. from the 19th century to the present while also offering a general introduction to U.S. business history and leadership theory with a particular focus on gender aspects. We will explore the achievements of business women from various industries and academic realms. Among others, the list of leading women includes the founder of the first African-American beauty empire Madam J. C. Walker, Tupperware marketing revolutionary Brownie Wise, and the present bestselling author and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. The lecture will be based on a wide selection of primary and secondary texts, journalistic sources as well as interviews and online material.
