Project title:

Insurgent Images. Militant Cinema Practices in Turkey, 1968-1980

Abstract:

This study investigates the militant cinema culture in Turkey, from the political upheavals of the late 1960s until the coup d'état of 1980 which interrupted all radical political and artistic activities, imposing a repressive neoliberal ideology onto the country’s agenda. By introducing and analysing the militantly engaged filmmaker collectives and their forgotten, untranslated, but highly rich textual and visual materials, the study will situate the militant cinema practices in their national and international context. It will present some of the cinematic inventions and their literary productions, such as Genç Sinema and Gerçek Sinema Journal, in relation to the social emancipation projects. The dissertation will argue and demonstrate that the most innovative political cinema practices emerges and explodes in the most contradictory social situations, where the peripheral reality and advanced technological and social elements coexist and contradict with each other.
