     International Conference in Vienna, 8th - 9th march 2019

Network of Interests and Centre of the Monarchical Reign: The Polish Court and Foreign Relation under the Vasa Dynasty

In the last two decades the international research on early modern history has turned again increasing attention to the problem of foreign relations. With regard to the dominating methodological trends of cultural history current studies revised various classical narratives as „the history of international relations“ or „the history of diplomacy“. Henceforth, it has been observed that the analytical concentration on states as players proved to be rather anachronistic for the early modern period. The focus of research thus moved to micropolitics of foreign relations and processes of entanglement in order to describe the complexities of early modern foreign relations more appropriately.

Nevertheless, international research often enough or still restraints itself to a geographical focus comprising a cold war concept of „Western Europe“ or goes totally global. Although the polish research shows considerable interest in the research of foreign relations, in international research Poland-Lithuania as one of the biggest and most important monarchies of early modern Europe is rather neglected. But the strong polish research tradition which focused inter alia on single noble players may resume the international trend of actor-centered microhistory. At the same time the still strong polish historiographical narrativ underlining the weakness of the monarchy and consequently of the court resulted partly in a neglect of the court as an entity of its own logic and mechanisms in the history of foreign relations.

The aim of the conference is to overcome the only concentration of single noblemen, the sejm or „the state“ and their respective role in foreign relations. The objective is rather to analyze the court as a coherent entity and to establish its possibly distinctive role within the complex of foreign relations. Therefore, it is important to look at the court as a specific binding juridical and social frame and simultaneously as a dynamic network and configuration of actors, hierarchies and practices.

The conference aims to extend beyond the narrow subject of our research project. Therefore, we like to put the correspondences of Ursula Meyer and the dynastic relations under Zygmunt III into a broader context and we want to discuss the role of the polish court in foreign relations in the time of the Vasa dynasty.
