The Body of a Diplomat
an idea: in negotiation - in process

“Let’s play the game of diplomacy!” - Focusing on the concept of 'the body of a diplomat', this project explores the relevance of the figure of the diplomat in contemporary culture, the politics of diplomacy as an art of negotiation, and the types of languages that help one communicate in difficult situations by avoiding or concealing harshness or conflict. Some of the questions that arise are therefore how the body maps countries, how it describes borders and preserves its immunity, and how it becomes a vehicle between private and public space while belonging in two places at once.

The coming together of this particular group of artists and the principles of our collaboration have been informed by our reading of Jacques Ranciere's 'The Ignorant Schoolmaster'. Ignorance therefore has helped us frame how we approach diplomacy, but also our different fields of knowledge and the process of learning from one another, and has allowed us to discuss issues of will and laziness, attention and intelligence, language and communication.

"The Body of a Diplomat" is realised through support by flausen-young artist in residence, a stipendiary pilot project by theater wrede + with support by Land Niedersachsen, Stiftung Niedersachsen, EWE-Stiftung, Stadt Oldenburg, Kulturamt der Stadt Gießen, HTA and CHOREODROME - The Place,.
