TALK ABOUT
THE DISCRETE CHARM OF URGENCY
Since artistic projects of the so-called Freie Szene are fundamentally dependent on public subsidies, writing grant applications is a task that has to be successfully completed by many artists. But what is a “good” concept? What is a promising application? And more generally, how do juries’ decisions take influence on the aesthetics in the performing arts or the programming of theatre institutions?
In EDITION NO. 8 of the ATW TALKS, member of staff Bernhard Siebert will discuss the issues of conceptual work, application prose and the decision-making processes of juries in a conversation with theatre scholar Sandra Umathum. Based on her work as a professor at Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch and jury member in the Berlin Senate (Senate Chancellery for Cultural Affairs) and the National Performance Network (NPN), Sandra will share her knowledge and experience in the field.
In the talk, there will also be room for an open discussion about specific aspects of the politics of public subsidies such as the obstacles of sustainability, the urgency to relate to socio-political questions or recent developments regarding the relation between German Stadttheater and Freie Szene.

EDITION NO. 8 of the ATW TALKS takes place in the frame of THEATERMASCHINE, the annual festival of the ATW students. For more information about THEATERMASCHINE, please visit the ATW homepage or the festival's facebook page.
The ATW TALKS are a series of talks and lectures at the ATW, the Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft at Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen. They have been taking place in a monthly interval since the end of 2015. Their aim is to create a forum for discussions on contemporary theatre, dance and performance, contributing to the academic and artistic discourse at the institute, in the city and in the Hessian theatre landscape. What is often considered an advantage of the ATW, will be equally true for the talks and lectures: hidden away from a general public with its necessity for self-representation, the context in Gießen offers a unique possibility for an open exchange with a critical perspective and for intense and extensive debates. Each edition of the ATW TALKS is moderated by a member of staff working at the institute. Invitations are extended to artists and academics from the performing arts and affiliated disciplines. The talks and lectures are generally conducted in English, on certain occasions though, they are held in German or French.
