  • The annual meeting of the DAKI-FWS project Data- and AI-supported early warning system to stabilise the German economy will take place from 29-30 June 2023 at JLU in the main university building. All project partners are expected in Giessen as well as associated partners from DWD, HLNUG and DKRZ.

  • Neues Projekt: MedEWSa - Mediterranean and pan-European forecast and Early Warning System against natural hazards, Horizon Europe, 2023-2026, finanziert durch die Europäische Kommission
Natural hazards such as extreme weather events due to climate change cause longer, more expensive and more frequent emergency responses with limited available resources, here particularly evident in rapidly warming regions. MedEWSa is developing novel solutions for timely, precise and actionable forecasting of impacts. Ambitious, comprehensive and innovative pan-European-Mediterranean-African solutions led by WMO will exemplify the UN Secretary-General's March 2022 call to ensure that all people on Earth are protected from weather extremes and climate-related hazards. This project will start in October 2023.
  • Neues Projekt: NUKLEUS2 - Usable local climate information for Germany 2
In order to provide reliable and usable climate information at the local level, systematic errors in the regional climate models must be corrected. The joint project "Usable Local Climate Information for Germany 2 (NUKLEUS2)" will also be one of two cross-sectional projects in the second phase of the RegIKlim funding measure. Partners are: Helmholtz-Zentrum hereon GmbH (Hereon), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum GmbH (DKRZ), University of Würzburg (UW), Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU), Dresden University of Technology (TUD).

  • The ITU-WMO-UNEP Focus Group on AI for Natural Disaster Management (FG-AI4NDM) (http://www.itu.int/go/fgai4ndm) is established. E. Xoplaki is a vice-chair of FG-AI4NDM. The first focus group workshop was held virtually from 15 to 17 March 2021. The webinar is available at: https://www.itu.int/en/ITU-T/Workshops-and-Seminars/20210315/Pages/default.aspx.
  • The First Plague Pandemic (541–750 AD): Transformative Disaster or Footnote in History?
The Volkswagen Foundation symposium will take place on 22-24 September 2021 at Schloss Herrenhausen in Hannover. The interdisciplinary symposium, organised by Christof Paulus (LMU), Elena Xoplaki (JLU) and Marcel Keller (UTartu), brings together renowned scientists and young researchers and revisits holistically the Plague Pandemic and its initial outbreak during Justinian's Reign 541-544 CE.
