Cloud Computing Resources

Justus-Liebig-University has been selected as one of the partner sites to host the dedicated Cloud computing infrastructure of the German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI). The required hardware and the OpenStack based software platform is administrated by the team of the Bioinformatics Core Facility.

With cloud computing, it is not necessary to make large upfront investments in hardware and spend a lot of time on maintaining and administrating that hardware. Instead, users can provision exactly the right type and size of computing resources they need to analyse their data sets. In general, it is possible to access as many resources as needed and if one site does not provide sufficient capacities also the resources of other Cloud computing providers can be utilised seamlessly.

General overview of the cloud infrastructure installed at Justus-Liebig-University Giessen.

As of April 2017, the following resources are available in total via the OpenStack Cloud infrastructure

  • 5.264 CPU cores
  • 49 TB RAM
  • 150 TB local storage

Hardware resources

The current setup of hardware resources within the de.NBI Cloud at Justus-Liebig-University consists of three major server types:

  • Compute I
Our main computing nodes have 2 CPUs (14 cores each) and 512 GB of RAM. This allows us to run various flavors on each machine with different amounts of main memory.
  • Compute II
These machines have 4 CPUs (14 cores each) and 768 GB of RAM. This class of servers is intended for bioinformatics workloads with higher hardware requirements as well as for orchestrated Cloud computing approaches.
  • Compute III
The largest machines in our Cloud installation are equipped with 4 CPUs (14 cores each) and 3 TB of RAM. Such high amounts of RAM are sometimes needed for the assembly of large eukaryotic genomes and metagenomes.
