30.09.2009: Gastvortrag an der University of Newcastle

Am 6. Oktober wird Prof. Janek eine Gastvorlesung im Department of Chemical Engineering der University of Newcastle halten. Thema: "Solid State Ionics - Is there more than fuel cells and batteries?"

Abstract

Solid State Ionics ? Is there more than batteries and fuel cells?

Sensors, fuel cells, lithium batteries, membranes ? Only few research areas within chemistry are as much driven by applications and technological developments as electrochemistry of solids (or ?solid state ionics?, as it is often addressed). Currently, the need for improved energy storage systems is dominating the field, but electrochemistry of solids has a much broader impact. What are the fundamentals of this highly interdisciplinary field at the interface between electrochemistry, materials science and solid state physics? What are the recent and future trends, and which fundamental questions are still open? In my lecture I will address two subjects with close links to chemical engineering: (a) Electrochemical promotion in heterogeneous catalysis and surface kinetics of solid electrolytes as its scientific basis. (b) Electrochemical processes in plasmas.
