Organisation

Trainer: Dr. Oliver Grewe

Date: 25./26.10.2021, 14.00 -18:00h

Location: online Cisco Webex

Max. number of participants: 12

Aim:

The aim of the workshop is to gain a deeper, praxis-oriented understanding of the Grant Application Peer Review Process. During the course, you will get a general overview on different review strategies and will participate in a practical training of a real review process. Hence, you will not only gain theoretical knowledge about the review process of grant applications but will experience the full complexity of the process.

Content & Method

The workshop will be a mixture of short impulse sessions on different reviewer strategies and background information out of the perspective of grant-offering agencies. In practical terms, the participants will participate in two role-plays of a reviewers meeting. Here the participants will learn how such a meeting works in reality. A prerequisite for this course is that the participants pitch their own application (see prerequisites below). The participants may realize the strength and weaknesses of the review process and will not only participate as grant applicant but likewise as reviewer. Hence, as applicant, they will learn how to specifically address the reviewers and as reviewers, they will gain experiences how to improve the review process.

Target group & Language

This workshop is open for postdocs and young scientist from the life and natural sciences primarily, who want to improve their understanding of the review process.

Prerequisite: Three weeks ahead of the workshop (Thursday, 01.10.2021) the participants need to hand in a fictional short application (one page; the call for proposals can be found in the detailed workshop description here). Two weeks ahead of the workshop, the participants will receive all fictional short applications for reviewing ahead of the workshop.

Details on the fictional application can be found here: https://www.uni-giessen.de/fbz/zentren/ggl/curriculum/Postdocs/workshops/2021/concept%20Grant%20review/view
