DAAD research fellowships for doctoral candidates

The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) offers scholarships of 1-12 months to doctoral candidates. The scholarships are intended to support further academic qualifications abroad. They are open for candidates of all disciplines.

This is a summary from the DAAD felowship database. All current data can be found here. The DAAD published this description in German only but applications in english and by non-germans are possible as long as you work on a doctorate at a German universitiy or other academic institution. The work on a research project abroad can take place at a university, a non-universtiy research institute or an industrial research laboratory.

Scholarship benefits

Prerequisits

  • have to be accepted as a doctoral candidate at a German university by the application deadline
  • the start of doctoral studies must not have taken place more than 3 years before the application deadline

selection criteria

  • scientific qualification ( documented via university diploma, expert opinion, publication list, CV or summary of your final thesis)
  • quality of the research project ( quality, originality, resonment for country and university selection)
  • Potential of the applicant (motivation, perspectives, extracurricular activities)

Duration of funding

  • The scholarships are for projects of a term between 1 and 12 month.

 

Application schedules

  • 2nd May - 15th June 2023, selection date september/october, start of scholarship from december 2023
  • 1st October - 15th November 2023, selection date february, start of scholarship from may 2024
  • 1st February - 15th March 2024, selection date may/june, start of scholarship september 2024

The deadlines are updates annually but but are mostly planned for the same peroids as the previous year. Please check the website for more current dates.

Application process

  • Applications are submitted electronically via the DAAD Portal.

 

Please note that you cannot apply for a research stay in your home country. You are supposed to travel to a different country for your exchange.
