Birte has been working at JLU since October 2009 and has previously held positions at the University of Bonn and the University of Freiburg. In 2012 and from 2014 to 2017, Birte has held research fellowships at Amherst College, the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, MA, and the University of California, Irvine. In the winter semester 2020/21, she serves as stand-in professor of American Literary and Cultural History at Tübingen University.
Her teaching and research interests include law and literature, transmedial narratology, women's, gender, and sexuality studies, middlebrow literature and culture, poetry studies, and approaches to teaching American literature and culture.

Hochschulpolitisches Projekt und Studie

„Parental Status: A Category of Identity and Analysis“

Befragt man Frauen in westlichen Demokratien unter 40, ob sie als Frau diskriminiert werden, antwortet die überwältigende Mehrheit mit „nein“ – solange sie keine Kinder haben. Der in Planung befindliche theoretische Grundsatz-Artikel argumentiert: „parental status is the new gender“ und wirbt dafür, die in den letzten Jahren bereits stark erweiterte Trias der Kategorien gender, race, and class um die Kategorie „parental status“ zu ergänzen.
