Earth-abundant nanostructures for solar energy conversion

The search for new and significantly improved solar energy conversion systems is currently a highly active research field world-wide and attracts major cross-disciplinary interest due to its relevance for solar fuel generation, production of clean drinking water, and greenhouse gas emission reduction. However, this search must include cheap and earth-abundant materials, in order to make a solar fuels-based economy cost-effective.

In this context, the group of Dr. Roland Marschall and his co-workers has developed agglomerate-free aqueous colloids of MgFe2O4 nanoparticles (~6 nm) by fast non-aqueous microwave-assisted solution phase synthesis. Colloidal stabilization of the nanocrystals was achieved either in aqueous and non-aqueous media, partly even during the microwave-assisted synthesis. Their applicability in photocatalytic oxidation reactions was investigated, indicating that surface stabilization can positively influence compound adsorption and enhance pollutant degradation.
