Education and Training for Sustainable Agriculture and Nutrition in East Africa


Food insecurity and malnutrition remain serious challenges for numerous households in Africa. Despite identifying nutrition-sensitive agriculture and diverse diets as strategies for improving nutrition, there is still insufficient information regarding the relationships between consumption and production strategies and requisite pre-conditions and incentives for farmers to engage in diversified crop production. In order to understand the food system approach associated with crop diversity and nutrition, Project EaTSANE employs an innovative, systemic approach across value chains to comprehend the associated constraints and identify transition paths to strengthen diversity in food systems and address the question, ‘What food system innovations in farming practices, value chains and nutrition behaviour lead to improved diet and more sustainable farming in Uganda and Kenya?’. Engaging a participatory action learning approach, the projects aims to:

  1. Encourage farming families to produce nutrient-rich crops via management practices to increase the production nutrient-rich foods for both food security and income generation
  2. Create the suitable contextual conditions and incentives for farmers and other actions to engage in diversified production and value chains of nutrient dense crops
  3. Understand and enhance the consumers’ food culture to promote healthier diets and more equitable distribution of food in households

The collaborative project between Justus-Liebig University Giessen and University of Hohenheim is handled by experts from various disciplines with wide experience in communication and learning approaches and stakeholder engagement to facilitate transdisciplinary research. This will be done by designing modules on sustainable farming practices and diversified diets to be implemented in schools, farmer clubs and national curriculum development centres. The research team will work with the farming community to exchange and produce knowledge on conservational agricultural practices, which will focus on the sustainable production of nutrient-rich and diverse food by improving soil fertility and the obstacles and opportunities for farmers to engage in diversified production and improvement of households’ food culture.

The results of the studies will be published in scientific journals and used for establishing a policy dialogue. The acquired knowledge will be disseminated nationally, particularly focused at women and the youth.

The project is being funded by the LEAP-Agri Programme over a three-year course from 1 September 2018 to 31 August 2021.
