For more than twenty years, the Center for international Development and Environmental Research (Zentrum für internationale Entwicklungs- und Umweltforschung, ZEU) of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) has conducted international research, consulting and teaching activities at the intersection of the natural and social sciences. It deals with today’s global challenges in the sustainable use of natural resources and, since its foundation, has successfully implemented more than eighty interdisciplinary projects with a total volume of about 12 million EUR. ZEU recruits its currently 45 academic members from the faculty of JLU’s departments of law, economics and business studies, social sciences, physics, agricultural sciences, nutritional sciences, biology as well as environmental management, and currently hosts a research staff of 19 young researchers and 2 administrative staff members. It has been in charge of successful capacity-building-projects within the EU-funded TEMPUS programme. Faculty members of ZEU are active in the Master programme “Transition Management” which was introduced in 2007 and has developed into one of the biggest study programmes taught in English language at Justus Liebig University.
Even though the Center does not exclusively focus on a particular world region, it is predominantly active in certain focus regions. These regions include East Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America and post-Soviet Eurasia, with an emphasis on the states of Central Asia and the Caucasus.
