On January 29, 2021, the SDGnexus Network organized a virtual regional workshop for Latin America. The workshop was chaired by Prof. Dr. Helmut Breitmeier and Dr. Alicia Correa (both JLU Giessen). During the event, more than 40 participants discussed conditions for and prospects of the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Latin America.

During the workshop, academic peers from Ecuadorian, Colombian and German institutions presented their transdisciplinary research projects related to socio-economic and environmental development. They included issues such as gender equity and peace, challenges of good living (Quechua: sumak kawsay), governance of coastal regions, low greenhouse gas emissions economy, as well as the role of transnational municipal networks as agents for the transformation of urban food systems.

Besides, topics on sustainable management of agricultural and natural ecosystems were discussed: Water-Energy-Food Nexus sustainability in the face of climate change, terrestrial observations in support of land degradation neutrality, irrigation as a driver of SDG outreach, and the scope of SDG monitoring in Latin America.

As a result, a common research agenda and prospects for multilateral cooperation between Latin American and German universities were identified. In addition, the workshop also discussed the expansion of collaboration with partners of the SDGnexus Network in Central Asia.
