06.10.2022 - Rethinking ‘Just Transition’: Critical reflections for the Global South

Prof. Dr. Stefan Peters and Nadia Catalina Combariza Diaz, Principal Investigator and Doctoral Student at the SDGnexus Network, with other researchers from Justus Liebig University Giessen, Dr. Pedro Alarcón and Julia Schwab, recently published a policy brief about the conceptualization challenges of the concept ‘just transition’ and operationalization differences between Global North and Global South.

The growing debate around ‘just transition’ goes in tandem with increasing awareness about (and willingness to act on) anthropogenic climate change. However, what is meant by ‘just transition’ and which policies are to be implemented to achieve this goal remains highly contested.

Authors recommend recognizing ‘just transition’ as an organic and, therefore, dynamic concept. This means ‘just transition’ narratives are not static but are constantly evolving regarding their intersections with different narratives in other geographies. Authors argue that energy transitions need to be examined from a more holistic, global, and decolonial perspective recognizing structural inequalities as well as past, present, and future injustices; therefore, case studies of the Global North should be regarded as context-specific examples of energy transitions –situated in certain historical and socioeconomic conditions.
