Opening a Bank Account
Depending on your length of stay it can make sense to open a bank account in Germany. Payments like your electricity bill or rent can then be transferred directly. It is also often a precondition for signing a work contract. You should open a checking account ("Girokonto") that allows for withdrawals and deposits.
Check out the terms offered by the various banks and find out whether there might be an arrangement with your home bank that will save you bank charges when you make international transactions. Of course you can also open a bank account with online banking allowing you to make transactions from home.
You will need the following documents for opening a bank account:
- your identity card or passport
- residence permit or registration confirmation of your place of residence
- a copy of your working contract or scholarship acceptance letter
If you prefer bank services in English, it is best to make an appointment in advance.
Paying Office for scholarships
Some scholarships are payed out in the form of cheques via JLU's paying office located in Goethestrasse 58, second floor, room 209 (open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9a.m. until noon). You can also call 0641-99 12442 to make an appointment.
