W3 Professorship in Pediatrics with a focus on

Reference is made to § 61 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
The successful candidate will represent the area of Pediatrics with a focus on Pneumology/Infectiology of the whole scope in teaching, research and patient care. The focus on pediatric pneumology and/or infectiology is aspired. The remit for the professorship comprises the management of the Clinic for General Pediatrics. An independent W2 Professorship in Neonatology is clinically integrated into the Clinic for General Pediatrics. Further focal points of the clinic include Gastroenterology, Endocrinology with Diabetology and Rheumatology.
In addition, the Center for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine includes independent clinics and professorships for Pediatrics with a focus on Neuro- and Social Pediatrics as well as Congenital Metabolic Diseases, for Pediatric Oncology/Hematology and for Pediatric Cardiology.
The core tasks of the successful candidate in patient care include the competent integrative management of the corresponding clinic within the framework of the above-mentioned specialties. In particular, the diagnosis and treatment of pneumologically and infectiologically ill children play a special role. The management tasks in patient care associated with the professorship are regulated by a contract with UKGM GmbH.
The research duties focus of the professorship will be on pediatric pneumology and infectiology. Cooperation with existing research consortia – especially with the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) and the German Center for lnfection Research (DZIF) – is required. Furthermore, a close cooperation with the research activities of the Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI) and the Institute for Lung Health (ILH), which is currently being established, with the SFB1213 Pulmonary Hypertension and Cor pulmonale and the Transregio TRR84 Innate Immunity of the Lung: Mechanisms of Pathogen Attack and Host Defense in Pneumonia as well as with future research collaborations is necessary. Collaboration in other existing structures of the Faculty of Medicine for the promotion of young scientists and clinicians, including “JLU-TRAINEE”, a structured graduate program, and “JLU-CAREER”, a clinician scientist program, is expected. This also applies to the cooperation with the Giessen Graduate Centre for Life Sciences (GGL). In terms of digital technology, a connection to the Institute for Medical Informatics and the Big Data initiative of the MIRACUM consortium (Medical Informatics in Research and Care in University Medicine) is envisaged.
An integration in the JLU’s focus area Cardio-Pulmonary System (Heart/Lung), the area of potential Infection, Inflammation and Immunity, and the accent areas Reproduction, Translational Oncology as well as Repair and Regeneration is expected.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is expected. This applies in particular to cooperation with the University Children's Hospital in Marburg.
Furthermore, the successful candidate will be desired to integrate gender issues in research, teaching and patient care. A strong involvement in cultivating international cooperation is also expected.
Applicants should be an internationally recognized leader, whose scientific focus is particularly in the field of pediatric pneumology and infectiology. Prerequisites for the position include a successfully completed university education in medicine, the necessary qualification for scientific work according to § 61 Para. 1 HHG, usually proven by a doctorate with merit, and further pertinent academic achievements (e.g. habilitation or internationally recognized subject-specific publications) are required. The scientific and clinical competence of the successful candidate should be proven by many years of experience in leadership positions. The applicant should be internationally recognized in his/her field of research and have extensive expertise in translational, clinic-based research. Experience and success in obtaining external funding, preferably from the DFG, EU or BMBF, is expected. International collaboration experience is required.
The successful candidate should have relevant experience in the field of pediatric patient care. The specialist certification for pediatric and adolescent medicine is required as well as the foundations for the acquisition of the corresponding advanced training authorization. Additional titles in the field of general pediatrics are desirable.
Furthermore, applicants should have a proof of a particular pedagogic aptitude, and a qualification to represent the specialist field in academic teaching with great commitment is required.
In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 60 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
