The Institute of Physical Chemistry (work group Prof. Dr. Doreen Mollenhauer), Faculty of Biology and Chemistry invites applications for a part-time position to the extent of 67 % full-time equivalent as a


Research Assistant


The position is available as of now until July 31st, 2023 in the third-party funded project “Novel lignin-based electrolytes for use in redox flow batteries”. The salary of the position is determined by payment group E 13 according to the collective labor agreement of the State of Hesse (TV-H).



Performance of quantum chemical calculations to determine structure-property relationships and degradation mechanisms of redox-active molecules for redox flow batteries. Besides screening of single redox-active molecules, degradation mechanisms on surfaces are investigated. Density functional theory with current corrections, wave function based and semi-empirical methods as well as machine learning are applied. The results are to be documented, evaluated and subsequently published. There will be a close cooperation with experimental working groups of the joint project.

Requirement profile:

  • You have successfully completed a scientific education at a University (diploma or master’s degree) in chemistry, physics or material science with very good results in theoretical chemistry / physics
  • Ideally, you have experience in the field of surface modelling and data analysis as well as in working with Linux systems and high-performance computers
  • The project involves intensive scientific exchange with scientists from experimental work groups. This requires a very good command of the English language, the willingness to participate in international cooperation’s, excellent communication skills and an interest in interdisciplinary issues
