Ensuring Good Scientific Practice

Statute

In order to ensure good scientific practice and deal with scientific misconduct, the university enacted the Justus Liebig University Giessen Statute for Ensuring Good Scientific Practice on July 14th 1999 and the update on May 29th 2002 (for an unofficial English translation, click here).

According to this statute, ombudsmen and a Permanent Committee must be elected via the senate—based on the president's suggestion—and then  be appointed by the president.

Ombudsmen

According to §8 of the Justus Liebig University Giessen Statute for Ensuring Good Scientific Practice, the ombudsman has, among others, the following tasks:

  • Advise the members and associates of Justus Liebig University Giessen who want to provide information about a case of scientific misconduct.
  • Collect relevant information.
  • Check whether the accusations are plausible and whether the possibility exists to dispel them.
  • Look after the victims and informants after completing a formal investigation.
  • Document the procedures, taking into consideration the confidentiality of informants and victims.
