International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture
The pioneering work and success of Germany’s first structured doctoral program at the Giessen Graduate Centre for Humanities (founded in 2001) was rewarded with the establishment of the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC).
Providing a research-intensive environment, a research program suited to the target groups and intensive personal supervision, the GCSC not only creates optimum conditions for doctoral studies, but also tailors preparation for the postdoctoral period.
Funding programs for graduate schools will soon expire in the Excellence Strategy, but the GCSC is now well established and will remain on a firm footing at JLU. It is also a role-model for structured doctoral studies at other JLU schools, namely the Giessen Graduate Centre for Social Sciences, Business, Economics and Law (GGS) and the International Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL). The centers have become indispensable as a driving force not only for training early-career researchers, but also for developing future areas of excellence.
