TURN Conference 2022 On 3 and 4 November, the TURN Conference '22 took place in Kiel. With the central theme "Shaping Change - Teaching and Learning Today for the Challenges of Tomorrow", the conference series, financed by the „Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre“ (Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education) and organised by Kiel University of Applied Sciences and Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, invited members of higher education, social actors and others interested in the topic to this year's conference to exchange ideas on many different aspects of teaching and learning. "Students and graduates should be able to tackle and master the challenges of the present and the future and thus actively shape social change. Higher education institutions are thus faced with tasks and requirements on a strategic and cultural as well as on a structural and practical level, which will be discussed within the framework of the TURN Conference 2022." NIDIT sent five staff members who presented two shortcut papers and put a poster online in the virtual marketplace: Dr. Inês Gamelas, tutor qualification officer at JLU, opened Shortcut Session 1 on Friday 04.11.22 at 10:30 am on the topic "To think or not to think? Inter-university group reflection as the key to success in tutor qualification" and presented its contents as a poster presentation. The shortcut contribution was developed in cooperation with Philipp Lindenstruth, Head of Teaching Development and University Didactics at Philipps-Universität Marburg, and aimed to present an innovative event of the tutor:ing qualifications of both universities. Dr. Inês Gamelas and Philipp Lindenstruth held a joint reflection event for tutors from both universities for the first time in the summer semester of 2022. (Link-NIDIT News) This interdisciplinary and cross-university reflection event aims to bring together tutors from different degree programmes and universities on a peer level. Designed under the concept of "learning from each other", this event is intended to provide tutors with opportunities for didactic reflection, to facilitate inter-university dialogue and, in the process, to strengthen cooperation between universities in tutor training. In this way, the isolation of (online) teaching can be mitigated and the exchange on tutorial activity can become more diverse. These ideas were presented in Kiel and caught the attention of various participants and guests, who gave exclusively positive feedback. At the same time, the Labs for Innovative Teaching team, Ramin Siegmund, Eva Dabrowski and Maraike Büst presented a real film video with animated sequences on the topic of "Labs for Innovative Teaching at Universities - an important prerequisite for building digital teaching literacy?" in Shortcut Session 5. In this video, the lab concept, similar to a makerspace with an open workshop character, was presented and the question was raised whether and how this concept can be used to make innovative digital teaching/learning methods accessible to teachers, tutors and students and make a valuable contribution to the development of key competences such as digital teaching literacy. With their technical equipment, the labs serve to provide further education and training as well as support and advice for teachers who would like to expand their teaching with the help of innovative technologies or are already in the middle of doing so. Prof. Silke Bock and Dr. Beate Ehret from the THM put together a poster on "How can academic staff development enhance teaching competencies for a digital and international future?", which presents the cooperative reflection process for promoting teaching and learning developments from action research and current practical examples from work with university teachers. The poster is available on the virtual marketplace of the TURN Conference. In addition to exciting shortcut contributions, mindfulness exercises, discussion rounds and their own contributions, colleagues Eva Dabrowski and Prof. Silke Bock took part in a symposium on promoting teaching innovation, among other things. On this topic, three different perspectives were examined in more detail and supplemented with examples from the respective universities; on the one hand, the view of innovation dynamics from the university management by Marco Winzker, the view of teaching staff on teaching innovations by Sigrid Harendza and, finally, that from university didactics by Birgit Rossmanith. The symposium was enriched with many active phases in which there was time for the exchange of experiences, discussion and creative activities such as writing a short song text and singing. It emerged from the lively exchange that many university members encounter the same challenges when it comes to developing teaching innovations and then making them permanent. The three stakeholder groups represented can support at different points in time, for example by facilitating opportunities where innovative and creative developments can emerge, be realised, used cooperatively, networked and further developed in a university. The programme was extended and rounded off with several keynotes. Particularly impressive was the keynote by Andra Krogmann and Tobias Holle (netzwerk n e.V.) on "Only with us! Higher education change as a learning task" because at the beginning of the speech... nothing happened. Andra Krogmann deliberately took time to perceive the moment in front of such a large audience and let it sink in. She used the initial irritation of the audience to introduce Network N and its goals. The network campaigns for sustainability and climate protection at universities and asks, for example: What are the advantages of an overall institutional change at universities? (https://netzwerk-n.org/ueber-uns/) The speakers enriched the keynote with murmur rounds and short votes in the audience. This showed the expertise of the organisers of TURN. Instead of only filming the stage perspective with a view of the speakers in the stream, the audience was accompanied by the camera during the active lecture phases. The participants in front of the screens had the opportunity to see the group dynamics on the spot and perhaps even recognise familiar faces. This had the effect of making people feel involved in what was happening on the ground instead of just passively watching. Between the individual lectures, coffee and meal breaks were used for intensive exchange about what had just been heard and for networking with other university members. It should be mentioned that the organising universities put together an excellent catering where nothing was lacking. TURN wants to encourage a change of perspective, change, openness and departure. The impressions and experiences of our colleagues confirm that the conference series does not promise too much. We look forward to next year in Cologne!
