Topic: Applying with a Child – Tips and Strategies from Application to Job Interview

Christine Schramm-Spehrer (Jobcenter Giessen)

This workshop is in German.

When starting a career, parents are often faced with specific challenges. Thoughts about own perspectives and wishes regarding working time, regional mobility, competences and self-marketing during the application process are just a few of them.

We deal with topics (questions) such as:

• How do I get started in time?

• What I consider and prepare in Advance?

• What places of work and working hours do I envision?

• How can I imagine the work-life balance and how do I discuss this tactically with future employers?

• Which of my competencies are valuable on the market?

• What additional competences useful for the career do I acquire in the family phase?

• What jobs would be suitable for me?

• How do I apply with a child?

Together we want to exchange ideas in this seminar on elements and factors of success when starting a career.

Objectives: The participants get an overview of the main career orientation factors, and the possibilities of entering a job market with a child.

Topic: How to make it work: children, career and a contented life!

Prof. Dr. Daniela Elsner (Coaching with Care, Frankfurt)

This workshop is in English.

Do you repeatedly ask yourself how you can actually make “it” all work? Do you sometimes ask yourself how you can achieve peak performance in your job whilst, at the same time, bring your own research projects to an end, frequently exchange ideas with colleagues and still be able to pick up your children at 4 pm from kindergarten? Are you looking for the key to climb the corporate ladder and still be able to look after your parents, meet your friends, and find some time for your hobbies without feeling completely stressed out?

The good news is: It is possible! You just have to learn how.

Learning how to “play” different spheres of your lives is comparable to learning a foreign language or learning how to play an instrument. To be really good at it, you a.) need to know your goals, you b.) need to learn from experts in this field, you c.). have to develop, train and apply relevant skills, techniques and strategies, you d.) need to have the right attitude.

In this workshop you will reflect upon your current and / or desired life situation as well as your professional and private goals. In individual, group and/ or partner work you will discuss and try out techniques and strategies for a better compatibility of your different life tasks. You will learn how prioritization, focusing and acceptance can improve your daily satisfaction. You will encounter effective and ineffective ways of time management, raise your awareness regarding unused resources, practice a stress management technique, and recognize the impact of the right attitude concerning your expectations regarding a satisfactory work-life balance.

Objectives of the workshop:

Participants of this workshop will

  • reflect upon their idea of a “good” work-life balance
  • analyze their current life situation
  • define their professional and private goals
  • learn, why prioritization is important
  • encounter different time management strategies
  • learn about stress management techniques
  • reflect their attitude concerning work-life compatibility

Topic: Labour-related Legal Issues

Dagmar Altenheimer (Human Resources Management of the JLU)

This workshop is in German.

A basic knowledge of labour-related legal aspects is particularly indispensable for young scientists, who want to reconcile family and career. Many laws have specific rules regarding family situations, which can have an impact, for example, on the duration of temporary contracts. During the workshop, our speaker from the JLU's Human Resources Department will address such aspects as higher education law, labour law, forms of employment, as well as other impacts on employment.
