Abstract

Research on proactive work behavior—behavior that is self-initiated as well as future- and change-oriented—has traditionally focused on its performance-related consequences and neglected potential effects on employees’ occupational well-being. In this talk, I present a series of longitudinal studies that explore mechanisms and boundary conditions of effects of (change in) proactive work behavior on (changes in) various indicators of occupational well-being. Key findings are that (a) high levels of proactive work behavior can drain employees’ physical and emotional resources and that (b) proactive work behavior can have negative effects on well-being when organizational support and coworker support for proactivity are low. I conclude the talk by outlining practical implications and directions for future research.
