For many young researchers, the question arises whether they would like or even need to spend some time abroad during their doctorate or postdoc phase in order to expand their scientific profile with international experience, specific competencies and a far-reaching network.

For reseachers with family responsibilities, however, such a stay presents a different challenge than for those without such responsibilities. Two young scholars who have already spent time abroad with their families in Brazil and the Netherlands report on how staying abroad with their family can be successfully organized, which particular difficulties should be considered, and which advantages and disadvantages such an enterprise entails.
