Peter Winker studied Mathematics and Economics at the Universities of Konstanz and Paris VI (Diploma, 1991). From 1991 to 1997, he was a research assistant at the University of Konstanz (doctoral degree 1995), from 1997 to 2001, he was a senior research assistant at the University of Mannheim, where he received his habilitation degree in 2000. From 2001 to 2002, he was associate professor of economics and quantitative methods at the Business School of the International University of Germany. In October 2002, he became full professor of econometrics at the University of Erfurt. Since January 2006 he has been at the Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen.

Peter Winker's research focuses on applications of novel optimization tools in different applications in statistics and econometrics, but also includes more applied economic and econometric research. He coordinated the EU funded research and training network COMISEF from 2006 to 2010 (www.comisef.eu). He published several books and more than 70 articles in refereed international journals (e.g., Applied Economics, Computational Economics, Computational Statistics & Data Analysis, Econometrics and Statistics, Internationale Journal of Forecasting, PlosONE, Technometrics).

Since 2008, Peter Winker is managing editor of the Journal of Economics and Statistics (Jahrbücher für Nationalökonomie und Statistik). He is also associate editor of Central European Journal of Economic Modelling and Econometrics, Computational Management Science, and Econometrics and Statistics. He is involved in several international organizations in the fields of computational statistics and econometrics (ERCIM, COST; IASC).
