We would like to invite you to the following Call For Papers for the conference ""Living Archives". History and Present of Intersectional Feminist Movements in Theory and Practice".
The conference is organized by the section "Politics and Gender" in the German Political Science Association in cooperation with the DFG Research Training Group "Contradiction Studies" and the research network "Worlds of Contradiction". The conference will take place from June 27-28, 2024 at the University of Bremen.

We want to direct your attention to a guest lecture on “Health, Human Rights and Intersectionality? - Reproductive Rights as Constantly Contested Human Rights” held Sibel T. Savas in Prof. Dr. Greta Olson's lecture series "Introduction to Gender and Sexuality, to Race and Anti-Racism, to Decolonial Thought, and Disability."
The guest lecture will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, February 6 at 4pm.
Sibel T. Savas (she/her) is working as a graduate scientific teaching and research assistant at the Institute for History, Theory and Ethics of Medicine at Justus-Liebig University Giessen since January of 2023. There, she is part of the subproject "Migration and the Advance of Human Rights in "Health": Paradigms, Practices, and Conflicts", led by Prof. M. Knipper, part of the larger, interdisciplinary research project "Human Rights discourses in Migration Societies“. In December 2023, Sibel took part in a roundtable discussion on Abortion Rights as Human Rights at the Human Rights Research Network’s Conference at Ghent University, Belgium. From August to October 2023, Sibel completed an internship as graduate teaching assistant at the department for preventative medicine and public health of the faculty of medicine at the University of Antioquia in Medellín, Colombia. Sibel finished her medical studies in November 2022 at Justus-Liebig University Giessen, where she also completed the extracurricular program on Global Health. At the University Hospital Bern (Inselspital Bern), Switzerland, she gained experiences in life-science research in the field of experimental pediatric pneumology. As a volunteer, she was active with the critical medical students Giessen as well as in the accompaniment of patients in the project "together against tuberculosis" in Giessen. Her research interests are situated at the intersection of health and human rights, especially peace and conflict in relation to health, the multiple determinants of health, as well as sexual and reproductive health and rights. She aims to create a space to think together about how an intersectional lens and a human rights framework might be helpful in order to analyze, understand, change and improve equitably the reproductive health of people and populations, health care and practices in medicine, globally and locally. The idea is to highlight the interconnectedness of individual and structural influences on reproductive health and rights, and the longstanding interaction of health and medicine with policy and laws.

She draws on transnational feminist and postcolonial perspectives in political theory to develop normative principles of solidarity that are responsive to structural injustice at a transnational scale. On Friday, October 20, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. (CET), Greta Olson and Christopher Breu will join K. Allison Hammer for a virtual book launch to talk about their new book, "Masculinity In Transition".
"Masculinity in Transition traces the roots of "toxic masculinity" and shows that while toxic masculinities are primarily associated with straight, white men, trans and queer masculinities also often repeat similar patterns of behavior. Arguing that these malignant forms of masculinity can be displaced, K. Allison Hammer's bold rethinking exposes the underlying fragility of normative masculinity."
K. Allison Hammer is Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Women, Gender and Sexual Studies at Southern Illinois University.

Movie Launch: “Beyond The Gaze: Media Awareness for Media Inclusivity”
In early August, the film "Beyond The Gaze: Media Awareness for Media Inclusivity" was released. The non-commercial educational film is a project by a group of students, scholars, and filmmakers led by Greta Olson. The film explores meanings of the "gauze," a white, hetero-patriarchal, ableist, colonial gaze that is conveyed in films and media. Alternating between theoretical analysis and personal accounts of experience, The Gaze examines mechanisms of discrimination at the level of representation, production, and reception. In understandable language, the short film discusses how it remains possible to enjoy media while developing a critical eye for how the "Gaze" makes social hierarchies and exclusionary mechanisms seem natural.

International Conference „Anti-Feminism and Anti-Gender Politics in Authoritarian Regimes“ from June 21 to 23, 2023
The political ascent of authoritarian populist regimes has triggered fears over the erosion of existing and evolving democratic processes in various parts of the world. A particular concern are the anti-feminist and anti-gender policies advocated by authoritarian populist movements as they pose a direct threat to the individual rights of women and LGBTI*Q persons.
The international conference „Anti-Feminism and Anti-Gender Politics in Authoritarian Regimes“ will be held from June 21 to 23, 2023 at Herder-Institut (Gisonenweg 5-7, Marburg). The purpose of this conference is to compare the anti-feminist politics of authoritarian regimes in the Near and Middle East and Eastern Europe. To that end, it brings together two strands of research – the study of anti-feminism and anti-gender politics and the study of authoritarian populism - and focus on two regions that have previously been under-researched from a comparative perspective. This conference builds on an interdisciplinary, comparative and historicising approach. It gathers experienced researchers from both regions and aims to generate new knowledge about the mechanisms of authoritarianism and anti-feminism currently at work in both regional contexts. The conference places particular emphasis on the role of the state and organised religion within these processes. Another thematic priority addressed in this conference is the counter-hegemonic strategies of feminist women’s rights movements.
This conference represents a cooperation between the Centre for Gender Studies and Feminist Futurology (ZGS) and the Centre for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS) at Philipps- Universität Marburg with the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe.

Workshop “Afro-Latinx Digital Storytelling. A Twine Journey to Narrative Decolonization” - Dr. Eduard Arriaga May 9 2023 at GCSC
Dr. Eduard Arriaga will facilitate a practical workshop on digital storytelling as both a creative and critical thinking practice to question traditional narratives (representations of time, space, and body materiality) on and about Afro-Latinx cultures. Participants will have the opportunity to explore Twine, an open-source tool to create digital games and narratives pieces. Likewise, the workshop will be a hands-on space to both discuss some narratives around Afro-Latinxs and create digital games/storytelling pieces in response to those narratives. No previous knowledge is required, although experience working with HTML or JSON will be a plus.
Keynote lecture “Afro-Brazilian Community Data Networks: Technological Hybridity, Data Decolonization and Human Reaffirmation” – Dr. Eduard Arriaga, May 9 2023 at GCSC
In this talk, Dr. Eduard Arriaga (Clark University) will present an overview of his research on Afrolatinx digital culture in the Americas, emphasizing how Afro-Brazilian groups and organizations are creating networks of hybrid technologies in search of data and technological decolonization. Dr. Arriaga will show how the studied groups adapt and adopt diverse media, digital tools, and platforms from an Afro-Brazilian Black feminism perspective to challenge data and technological determinism. Likewise, he will discuss the way these groups get connected to local, regional, and global nodes to develop critical pedagogies of the digital from the South. The talk will conclude discussing how Afro-Brazilian Community data networks become an example of hybrid Black communal digital practices that require complex approaches that go beyond the boundaries of fields such as the digital humanities.

Are we witnessing a new Cold War between liberal and illiberal forces globally waged on “gender as symbolic glue”? Attacks on reproductive rights fill the headlines and government-sponsored billboards promoting motherhood and condemning abortion proliferate, while the allegedly mainstream right-wing governments increasingly adopt positions previously espoused only by the far right creating a dangerous void in the center of the political spectrum. Posters of smiling white mothers with cute white babies are covering the expensive billboards advertising motherhood from Hungary to Poland, from Germany to Denmark, from Russia to Serbia. Is the ethnocentric pronatalism of today the same pronatalism as of the interwar period concerning its rhetoric and potential for mobilization? Should the triple – financial, security, and ‘refugee’ – crises of the years following 2008 and/or the COVID-19 pandemic be considered as our era’s trigger moments? This talk tries to give an answer to these troubling questions, using a historical comparative analysis of the different phases of contestations of reproductive rights – abortion policy and promoting righteous motherhood.

The ZMI will host a lecture event titled ”Life after Dobbs: How the Supreme Court Is Influencing the Midterms and Cultural Politics in America and Germany.” We welcome Dr. Michaela Dudley as guest speaker who will provide us with a primer on ”White Rage and Black Humor” in her talk ”Life after Pro-Choice: Mid-Terms, the Supreme Court and the Futility of American Politics.”
Prof. Greta Olson and Dr. Laura Borchert will speak about the aftermath of the court ruling in the case of ”Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Orgaization” (2022) and its effects on the Midterm elections. The event will be held in person and will be recored. We warmly invite you to participate in the subsequent question-and-answer session. The presentations will be in English, but German questions are strongly encouraged. The event is an extension of Olson's lecture ”’Woman’ / Feminisms / Queer / Trans and Nonbinary / Race / Nation / Ability – Decolonizing Knowledge, Introducing Diversity Studies and Inclusion” and will take place on 7 November 2022, on the eve of the U.S. Midterms, from 4 to 6 p.m. s.t. in the Aula of the Hauptgebäude (Ludwigstr. 23, 35390 Giessen).
Dr. Michaela Dudley is a Berlin-based progressive woman with Afro-American roots. Born ”in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty,” she experienced Jim Crow segregation in her early childhood. The 61-year-old publicist, cabaret artist, queerfeminist and jurist epitomizes intersectionality. Indeed, both in her professional and her private spheres. She’s the authoress of the German-language book Race Relations: Essays über Rassismus (2022) – a volume of essays addressing racism and displaying her lyrical artistry and her expertise as a connoisseur of American political history. Recently in Berlin, she met with the iconic activist Angela Davis and described the encounter in the gay rights magazine Siegessäule. Additionally, her unsparingly frank columns in the German daily newspapers taz and Tagesspiegel and her satirical television commentaries in Kulturzeit (3Sat) have made her revered and feared.
This is a teaching position (3 courses per week) for three months, which is remunerated by 20.000 Euros before tax. The deadline for applications is: 25th Nov. Scholars from literary studies, linguistics and cultural studies are eligible for appliction.

International Conference ”The Emergence of Gendered Power Structures since Early Modern Times: Practices, Norms, Media”: November 23 to 25, 2022
After the conference’s opening on the first day with an evening lecture, the following two days will feature three sessions consisting of two panels, each scheduled to respectively highlight the leading categories of gender, power relations, and state. Each session will open with one keynote. The second day will start with the keynote focused on Gender, leading to the panel discussions on „Medialization of Gendered Rule” and „Imaginations of Female Presidency in TV Series”, which will then be followed by the keynote focused on PowerRelations with the attached panel discussions on „Entangling Conceptions of ‚Weak Rule’ and ‚Femininity’ from Shakespeare Plays to Presidential Representation” and „Subalternity and Epistemic Violence”. The third day will open with the Keynote focused on the State and then proceed with the panel discussions on „Sexuality, Violence and the State: Norms and Regulations” and „Women as newly emergent Political Actors”.
The event will open with an introductory keynote, held on November 23 by Prof. Myra Marx Ferree (University of Wisconsin-Madison). The speakers for the three following keynotes are Prof. Helen Watanabe-O'Kelly (University of Oxford), Prof. Claudia Ulbrich (FU Berlin), and Prof. Birgit Sauer (Universität Wien), focusing on Gender, Power Relations, and State, respectively.
The conference will take place at the Herder-Institute Marburg from Wednesday, November 23, to Friday, November 25, 2022 and will be held in English. Participation in person is limited. Online participation is possible. For an attendance in presence, registration is required: gms

Andrea Zittlau und Katharina Schlegel
In 2020, when, due to the pandemic, sexwork – like many other businesses – was shut down momentarily, some sexworkers took their chance to learn German and I gladly taught them. As the encounters grew more private and intense, I turned our conversations into poetry; fragmented glimpses into the lives of women in the sexwork business. The poetic performance of one of their voices will frame this lecture. The lecture contextualizes the poetry project within the theory framework of gender and sexuality guided by the work of Gayle Rubin, Annamarie Jagose and Susanna Paarsonen.
Katharina Schlegel is a dancer, choreographer and drama teacher currently at the theater Plauen-Zwickau.
Andrea Zittlau teaches American Studies at the University of Rostock. Her community outreach projects involve poetry and performance art and tackle topics such as incarceration and sexwork.
This lecture and performance is part of Greta Olson`s lecture series “Gender, Sexuality, Diversity – History, Theory, Applications” during the summer term 2022 at JLU.

Guest Speakers were Krista Lynes (Canada Research Chair in Feminist Media Studies and Associate Professor in Communication Studies at Concordia University, Montréal), Jennifer Kamau (International Women*Space Berlin) and Greta Olson (JLU Giessen). Zeynep Gambetti and Verónica Gago, two foremost critical theorists of (post-)neoliberal transformations and collective acts of resistance today, will stage a much anticipated public dialogue on feminist politics in neoliberal times as part of the virtual lecture series Transnational and Intersectional Critiques of Power. Based in Turkey and Argentina, respectively, they will discuss how transnational feminist, queer and trans*, worker, landless, student, and activist mobilizations around the world are confronting “conditions where the popular fabric is confronted with increasingly fast-paced and violent dispossessive, extractive, and expulsive logics” (Gago). What new forms of organizing and political action have emerged from densely interconnected sites of struggle throughout the Americas, Europe, and the wider Middle East? What are the disruptive and constituent capacities of transnational feminism(s) today?
In preparation for a lively discussion with the audience, the GGS research section Transnational and Intersectional Critiques of Power will hold two open preparatory sessions (in English language) to “READ & DISCUSS” a selection of the speakers’ published works around our digital kitchen table. All are welcome.

"Vor Ort: Fotogeschichten zur Migration, presented at Museum Ludwig, Cologne (June 19 – October 3, 2021) has offered a new focus on the private photographs and their stories narrated by their makers and protagonists. Depending on the choice of setting and framing in public places of Cologne and other cities in the Rhineland, a series of visual narratives emerged from 1955 to 1989 among labor migrants who passionately photographed themselves, their families, and their living environments. Yet those narratives rather remained unknown and underrepresented in the postwar history of cities, even though the chosen sites were essential for the personal as well as collective memories, as such amateur photography also documented the urban and social transformations in cities."
Dr. Ela Kaçel is an architectural historian and co-curator of the exhibition "In Situ: Photo Stories on Migration," which features photos of so-called 'guest' workers of Cologne and other cities in the Rhineland. "In Situ" covers the period between 1955 and 1989 after the labor recruitment agreements between West Germany and mainly Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Turkey. The lecture is part of the weekly seminar "Images of Migration", which covers the topics of flight, migration, human rights and critical media studies.

Andy Halus is the Public Affairs Officer for the U.S. Consulate General in Frankfurt, Germany. His talk will focus on his work advocating within the State Department’s bureaucracy and while assigned in Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq, and Morocco. The guest lecture will include time for Q and As from a German- and English-speaking audience.
This talk is part of the weekly lecture series "Introduction to Gender, Sexuality, and Diversity Studies", which covers topics of feminism(s), gender, queer and trans theory and rights, race, religion, migration, and ableism as well as historical and current forms of discrimination. The lecture series presents a kick-off to the Justus-Liebig-University’s new certificate in gender, sexuality, and diversity. We would like to inform you about an upcoming zoom workshop on Poster Design and Presentation with Dr. Imke Lode (ProSciencia, Lübeck) on October 14, 2021 from 9 am to 5 pm, organised by Gender section of GRADE - Graduiertenakademie of Goethe University Frankfurt. The workshop is open to students and researchers wanting to develop a new research poster from scratch, as well as those that are already working on a poster.

Abstract
The one-day, interactive online workshop on the design and presentation of scientific posters addresses GRADE Center Gender members, advanced Master students, doctoral students and post-docs from the social sciences and humanities and will focus on aspects of gender studies - including the choice of images for the resulting posters.
The workshop will take place via Zoom in German and English and will consist of input lessons/a video webinar as well as various application-oriented individual and group exercises with intensive peer and limited trainer feedback.
The workshop covers the following topics:
General aspects regarding purpose, audience, story of your poster.
Poster content; planning your poster
Poster layout and text; poster illustrations
Oral presentation skills of your poster, e. g. body language, use of your voice
Question & Answer session; "what if ..." and other challenges.
In the workshop, theoretical input will be intertwined with practice and the lessons learned will be put into practice immediately. For this purpose, participants should have a poster/ poster draft available, either digitally on their laptop so that they can continue working on the poster directly, or printouts of illustrations and texts for a poster, which they can integrate into a layout.
The workshop goal is to prepare participants for the creation of scientific posters for an exhibition.
In order to guarantee the interactive quality of the workshop the number of participants is limited to a maximum of 15 participants.

On May 19, the conference volume „Trans* Time. Projecting Transness in European (TV) Series“ has been published in the Interaktiva series of the Center for Media and Interactivity. The volume was edited by Dr. Danae Gallo González (Romance Studies, University of Giessen). The volume is the first international comparative study of trans* representations in European television and streaming series. It ties in with the conference "Trans* Time in (TV) Series: (Inter) national Projections", which was organized in January 2020 by the ZMI section "Media and Gender" and the Institute for Romance Studies at JLU Giessen.
The content of the book is innovative in two ways: for the first time, the focus is on European series productions and, for the first time, a systematic and critical comparison of the respective countries takes place. The contributions do not only analyse selected series; they also place the media productions in the legal, social and historical context of the respective country with regard to the situation of trans* people.
The contributions are introduced by a foreword by Dr. Jutta Hergenhan, Scientific Director of the ZMI and spokesperson for the section “Media and Gender”. The volume closes with an afterword by Prof. Dr. Greta Olson, member of the section “Media and Gender”.
The volume was published in Campus Verlag and is now available as an e-book and in print format.

On July 6 2021 at 6:15 pm there will be an online screening of the movie "LIVE" by Lisa Charlotte Friedrich. After the screening Greta Olson will interview director and actress Lisa Friedrich about the movie. Lisa Friedrich is the new member of the section of Media and Gender.
Her film “Live” (2020) explores the emotional challenges of living in isolation. It imagines a future in which the constant threat of terrorism has forced people to lead solitary existences and discusses the significance of communal experiences during periods of confinement. “Live” was released in theaters on 10 December 2020.

International Conference on Digital Humanities and Gender History
The Chair of Gender History at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, together with the Arbeitskreis Historische Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung e.V. and the Digital German Women's Archive (Digitales Deutsches Frauenarchiv), is organising a virtual international conference on "Digital Humanities and Gender History" on four Friday afternoons of February 2021. The meetings will take place on 5.2., 12.2., 19.2. and 26.2.2021, 4 - 8 p.m. The ZMI member Prof. Dr. Thomas Gloning will be represented with a lecture together with Anna Pfund at the conference.
The conference aims to address gender-historical aspects of the history of the digital and the digital humanities as well as the application of digital methods and research workflows for gender-historical questions. The conference will examine the gender-historical implications of digital methods, tools and projects as well as the possibilities and limitations, added values and challenges that digital methods offer for the study of gender history.
The four conference afternoons in February form a unit, so participation in all four dates would be desirable. The conference languages are English and German. We are currently planning to provide automatic simultaneous English translation of the German contributions.

Interdisciplinary Research Network GENDER, POWER RELATIONS, AND THE STATE
This research network investigates the tensions between the guiding concepts of gender, power relations, and the state. These tensions are visible in the gendered dynamics of formal and informal practices of (state) power and domination. The projects cover interactions between medializations, social practices, and normative framings in the attribution and negotiation of gendered (state) power in the process of historical change from the early modern period to the present. This interdisciplinary network consists of scholars from the disciplines of literary and cultural studies, media studies, history, political science, art history, and psychology. It is located at the Center for Gender Studies and Feminist Futures at the University of Marburg, but also includes scholars from the Herder Institute for Historical Research on Eastern Central Europe - Institute of the Leibniz Association, from the Justus Liebig University of Giessen, and from the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster. A Flexi Funds application will be submitted in March 2021. The long-term goal is to establish a DFG research group.

In-Visibilities. Renegotiating Minoritarian In_Visibilities. Interdisziplinäre Konferenz
Paradoxical political developments in the ‘Global North’ – in particular the commercial, capitalist and legal embrace of sexual, gender and racial minorities and the rise of far-right nationalism, with its attendant visible and violent classism, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, and sexism – ask for an urgent renegotiation of minoritarian politics of in__visibilities. Against this backdrop, the international and interdisciplinary conference Renegotiating Minoritarian In__Visibilities will investigate how minoritarian strategies in art and visual culture can undermine hegemonic regimes of representation and challenge the dominant patterns of visibility, assimilation and intelligibility. Considering close connections between academia, art critique/practice and activism, the societal relevance of the conference is grounded in its exploration of aesthetic strategies that counteract processes of discrimination and stereotyping due to gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, age and further categories of difference.
The three-day conference with its format variety (workshops, artist talk, lecture-performance, keynote lecture, short panel presentations, etc.) will take place on November 12-14, 2019 at the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) and the Institute for Art Education at Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, Germany. In addition, a kick-off event in the form of a performative presentation including a film screening will be offered on November 11, 2019 in the Margarete-Bieber-Saal.

Call for Papers für die englischsprachige, interdisziplinäre Konferenz "Renegotiating Minoritarian In_Visibilities" (12.-14. November 2019)
In recent years, the relation between visibility and invisibility of minoritarian subject positions has been renegotiated and led to a preliminary re-assessment of the political potential of the concept of visibility. Thereby, invisibility or imperceptibility are subject to significant revaluation. Especially from activist, cultural and political points of view and in the contexts of queer or non-racist politics of migration, attempts have been made to question the topos of visibility and its positive connotations. However, the debate about a possible end of the critique of representation often disregards that politics of becoming imperceptible or invisible can indeed develop new modes of presentation and perception and therefore cannot unfold beyond representation.
In an attempt to distance the renegotiation of minoritarian in_visibilities from post-representational arguments, this conference approaches visibility and invisibility as two mutually entangled and interdependent concepts. By using the underscore in the orthography (in_visibility), we want to highlight two approaches to these terms: On the one hand, the underscore indicates the processual continuum between the two concepts. On the other hand, we want to approach the conceptual gap between visibility and invisibility as a discursive space for the negotiation of ambiguity, vagueness and indeterminacy. The use of the term “minoritarian”, moreover, points towards context-specific processes and situations of structural discrimination due to categories of difference, thus, it highlights the process of becoming-minoritarian. However, without reducing subjects to this position, we ask how a seemingly minoritarian status can be transformed into political agency. Accordingly, our research interests focus on strategies of becoming in_visibile from a minoritarian point of view. The conference will investigate how minoritarian strategies in art and visual culture can undermine hegemonic regimes of representation and challenge the dominant patterns of visibility, assimilation and intelligibility. Recent political developments, be they the worldwide growth of repressive regimes or the neoliberal ideology of the so-called ‘Global North’, together with their accentuation of representation and enforced identity politics, underline the topicality and urgency of this approach.
Following a power-analytical as well as a critical stance toward domination and ideology, the conference will explore the connections between strategies of becoming in_visible in art and visual culture and their potential for developing individual or collective political agencies. The relations between implicit (closed, camouflaged, invisible, etc.) and explicit (blunt, open, visible, etc.) strategies of becoming in_visible and their specific, context-dependent potential for political agency shall be investigated in detailed analyses of case studies.
The societal relevance of this conference is grounded in its investigation of aesthetic strategies that counteract processes of discrimination and stereotyping due to gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, age and further categories of difference. Considering close connections between academia, art critique/practice and activism, we want to examine the social productivity of images and develop new conceptual approaches for the comprehension of politics and emancipation in art and visual culture.
The conference will deal with the following questions and topics (amongst others):
How do strategies of in_visibility in art and visual culture produce and reinforce political agency for minoritarian subject positions?
Who is able to utilize in_visibility for political agency? Whom is this strategy denied?
How can minoritarian subjects become visible in art and visual culture but avoid subsequent re-discrimination and stereotyping due to their recently acquired visibility?
To what extent is it possible to evade intelligible and assimilationist patterns of comprehensibility by using minoritarian politics of in_visibility?
Who is in charge of the global circulation and the directions, speed and properties of the dissemination and marketing of minoritarian forms of in_visibility in art and visual culture?
How are forms of in_visibility modified by processes of imaging, image formation and mediality?
How can we shed light on blind spots; in particular, how can we become aware of ‘our’ ignorance of forms of invisibilities?
Is it possible to differentiate various forms and functions of in_visibility from a historical perspective? How and why do these forms change?
Analyses of different visual-aesthetic strategies and case studies of in_visibility may refer to the following theories and concepts, without being limited to them: demoulding (= EntFormen) (Fahim Amir and Johanna Schaffer 2012), Mimicry and third space (Homi K. Bhabha (1994), un-disambiguation (= VerUneindeutigung) (Antke Engel 2002), opacity (Glissant 1990), aesthetical ambiguity (Verena Krieger 2010), space-off (Teresa de Lauretis 1999); abstract drag (Renate Lorenz 2014).
Conference format:
Connecting theory and practice, the conference will provide spaces for various artistic, scholarly and political forms of exchange. Therefore, we ask for submissions for various forms of contribution (papers for panel discussions, workshops and/or other experimental formats). Seeking trans- and interdisciplinary exchange, we invite proposals from the disciplines of cultural studies, visual communication, art history and theory, art education as well as art practice and aesthetic-political activism, photojournalism, cultural education, history and media studies (amongst others).
Abstracts for contributions should not exceed 400 words and should be accompanied by a brief curriculum vitae of maximum three pages.
Panel presentations are scheduled for 20 minutes and subsequent discussion. Workshops and other experimental formats will take 90 minutes.
A subsequent publication of the contributions is intended.
The three-day conference will take place on November 12–14, 2019 at the Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) of the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, Germany. The section "Media and Gender" deals with current developments of the media landscape from a gender-sensitive perspective. Gender is seen as a category that structures society fundamentally (physically, linguistically, legally, socially). In addition, gender plays an important role in the analysis of other inequality phenomena (racism, classism, ableism) and their mutual dependency (intersectionality).
Media plays a central role for the construction of individual and collective gender identities. Gender attributions are made via the media and stereotypes are developed. At the same time, social media in particular is used to protest against stereotypical gender images, to deconstruct them, and to create new gender representations. In this context, an important field of research is the analysis of media production and the glorification of sexualised violence, as well as media protest against it (e.g. #metoo, #aufschrei).
Furthermore, the creation of media products and the use of media have a gender dimension insofar as men and women are involved differently in them. In this context, we would like to highlight the informal processes of inclusion and exclusion in regard to gender, particularly connected to phenomena of digitalisation. Last but not least, human-machine issues play a central role at the intersection of media and gender research.
The section does not explicitly focus on gender-related topics of the Global North, but rather has broad research interests in terms of content and methodology. We are particularly interested in media issues from the technical, medical, natural, and human sciences where a gender dimension may only become apparent upon a closer look.

In early August, the film "Beyond The Gaze: Media Awareness for Media Inclusivity" was released. The non-commercial educational film is a project by a group of students, scholars, and filmmakers led by Greta Olson. The film explores meanings of the "gauze," a white, hetero-patriarchal, ableist, colonial gaze that is conveyed in films and media. Alternating between theoretical analysis and personal accounts of experience, The Gaze examines mechanisms of discrimination at the level of representation, production, and reception.
