Research Training through Cutting-Edge Research in the Study of Culture

Envisaging texts, social structures and practices, and (more-than-)human interaction as cultural phenomena creates a common ground for dialogue among various disciplines across the humanities and social sciences. The GGK/GCSC provides an inspiring forum for many individual and collaborative projects in the interdisciplinary study of culture.

Established in 2001, the GGK was the first structured PhD programme in the humanities and social sciences in Germany. Widely acknowledged as a pioneering model for postgraduate education, it paved the way for the foundation and continued success of the GCSC in the context of the German Excellence Initiative (2006-2019). Ever since, the GCSC’s major aim has been to create an ideal research environment for PhD and postdoctoral researchers. Methodological pluralism, a genuinely international orientation and strong international networks, interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation in the research profile, and a holistic research training programme constitute the core of our mission.

The GGK/GCSC brings together about 90 doctoral candidates, 15 postdocs, and 40 established researchers from disciplines as diverse as sociology, political science, history, art history, archeology, literature, linguistics, and pedagogy. We are committed to fostering scholarly dialogue and collaborative learning in the study of culture across career stages and disciplines.
