Migration and (De)coloniality

This working group aims to encourage, enable, and develop an interdisciplinary discussion forum that engages with the movement of people, things, and ideas from post- and decolonial perspectives. Engaging with immigrant and diasporic networks embedded in national structures, our group has focused on the cultural transformation of regions and questions of the geopolitics of inter-imperiality. Further, a special focus is given to the discussion of decolonial research methods mainly at the interpersonal level when working together with research collaborators rather than with texts or archives. This focus has lead us to discussions around Participatory Action Research (PAR), ethnographic visual methods, and arts-based methods.

Currently, we are working on an event series titled “Weaving Knowledge” that aims at bringing together academics, artists, activists and practitioners who, through their work, show engagement with communities and propose alternative forms of knowledge production and knowledge distribution. We plan to host a series of events throughout the upcoming Winter and Summer semester 2022/23 such as lectures, discussions, workshops and performances in order to extend our discussions beyond research groups and academia and engage in a process of mutual learning. Taking up Maria Tengö’s et al. proposed framework of “weaving” to describe “collaborations that respect the integrity of each knowledge system,” with this event series, we are interested in exploring collaborations of epistemic production and exchange that weave together different forms of knowledges and thereby engage in “knowledge-sharing processes that are equitable and empowering” (2017: 18–19).

We are very much looking forward to welcome new members any time! Please contact the speakers for any questions.

13.-15. November, Insitut für Soziologie, Justus-Liebig Universität Gießen

Crisis is not exceptional in capitalism but its constant companion. It represents the founda- tion from which the modern/colonial world sys- tem has evolved. This conference draws on criti- cal feminist economics and decolonial feminist thought and practice on material matters. The question of materiality has emerged as a central topic in recent years. Under the umbrella term “new materialism”, this interdisciplinary and multifaceted academic debate seems to have re- vived a Marxist vocabulary. Yet, the question of why “materiality” matters in times of crisis ca- pitalism is rather absent in this debate. We are considering this question by three inter-related aims: first, to examine from transnational femi- nist perspectives the impact of the global crisis on people’s livelihoods; second, to explore the theoretical contributions of the triad of femi- nism, coloniality and political economy; and, third, to consider critical feminist economics and decolonial approaches to thinking alternative economies and convivial futures.
