Subject Area

The research-oriented course of studies continues from comparable or connected BA courses. It is organized jointly by the Institut für Evangelische Theologie (Department of Protestant Theology) and the Institut für Katholische Theologie (Department of Catholic Theology). From a confession-specific, ecumenical and interdisciplinary perspective, it makes academic studies possible which are concerned with religiousness, religion and the religion-based formation of groups and religious movements and their traditions and medial encodings, which form our globalised living environments. In our largely secular society these give a thematic and/or unthematic colouring to our experience together with a normative orientation and offer sense-giving patterns, even in places where we have forgotten their source or there is not enough clarity about a religious tradition. At the same time our society is increasingly being confronted with a variety of religious traditions in good publicity.
The course sharpens perception and promotes the ability needed to discursively and creatively overcome this interplay between religion and culture, its medial presentation and its effect on society. Through its modular structure, also involving non-theological cultural science subjects covered by faculty 03 and  04 of the JLU, the course is confession-specific, ecumenical and with an interdisciplinary profile, so offering the study perspective described above.
As a postgraduate course or a broadening of studies the Master`s course trains participants in the skills needed for social and educational work, in the health sector, in personnel management in public relations and in administration, a deepened and a persistent communicative competence in the multi-faceted area of religion and how to use these skills effectively and communicative-oriented. Additionally, a large number of fields of socio-cultural research areas are opened to the students.
