Title: The Latent Adaptation-State-Trait (LAST) Framework

Abstract: A common understanding of personality needs clear and common definitions. The field of personality psychology, however, has produced varied concepts of personality characteristics (e.g., traits, motives, values, or narratives) and structurally organized systems to describe personality differences and individual uniqueness. There is no sufficiently common understanding of what personality comprises. I will argue that a full understanding of personality differences and development has to include the persons’ characteristics, the characteristics of their environments, and the extent to which persons and their environments fit. In this talk, I will build on and harmonize existing and partly conflicting theories as well as methodological approaches to clearly define and operationalize traits, states, and adaptations in one framework. Traits are defined as characteristics of the person, adaptations as characteristics of the person-in-contexts, and states as characteristics of the person-in-situations. Based on these concepts, I will provide testable criteria to differentiate person characteristics from characteristics of person-environment units. In addition, I will outline implications for the assessment and modeling of inter-individual differences and intra-individual development.
