Abstract:
This presentation examines the systemic violence inherent in the Animal-Industrial Complex (AIC) pointing to how we may confront this violence both at the level of theory and practice. It will introduce the concept of ‘bodies in the basement’ as a way to highlight how the structural violence of capitalist production and consumption systems could be made visible allowing for the emergence of a more intentional, self reflective citizenship that extends beyond the rights of human animals and reflects a global orientation that includes both individual and structural compassion for nonhuman animals.
