Each session is designed to be independent of the others, so that you may attend any number desired to the extent you feel useful. Additional assistance, resources and information may be provided upon request.

 

 

Each session will consist of a theoretical topic or topics, followed by time for small groups of participants to actively produce exercises and activities designed to allow them the opportunity to put what they have learned into practice.

 

 

 

Planned session content

Session 1               Introduction: What is teaching? What is learning? Definitions and working models

Session 2               Learner types: The different types of learners, and approaches to reach them

Session 3               Setting parameters: Determining what to teach and what not to teach, and why

Session 4               Teaching styles: Different ways to provide learning opportunities

Session 5               Material management: Ways to handle information transfer, activities, exercises

Session 6               Focus on assessment: Methods of evaluating, providing feedback, testing

Session 7               Classroom management: Creating and maintaining a productive learning environment

Session 8               Review and Revision: Lead-in to the first day of class

 

 

The general structure of each session will be as follows:

 

  1. Introduction to and discussion of theory and methods (about 60 min.)
  2.  Small group exercises designed to produce teaching example activities, focusing on the theory, methods and language related to the topic(s) of the day (about 60-90 min.)
  3. Group presentation of activities developed in the second block (the remaining time, about 60-90 min.)

Two short breaks will be included in each session.

 

Trainer: Laurence Henry attended and taught at universities in Virginia and Texas, and completed a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, and Master’s degrees in Human Nutrition and Health Education. Since 2008, he has been teaching English at the University of Giessen and the University of Marburg, as well as in private universities and companies. He is also a speaking examiner and examination invigilator for Cambridge English and the British Council (IELTS).
