Projects

  • Modes of Perception in the Late Classical and Early Hellenistic Periods [more...]

In contrast to the historical and historiographical break caused by the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC, the changes concerning perception in art and literature cannot be pinpointed clearly. This project investigates the gradual shift from the Late Classical period to the Early Hellenistic period and their respective underlying dispositions for perception. The investigation is realised by implementing a cross-media approach firmly rooted in cultural studies. Its focus especially lies on phenomena that can be traced as valid transmedial strategies of representation and can therefore be understood as elements of specific dispositions that interact reciprocally.

Digital and immersive technologies have been playing a central role in research and knowledge transfer for several years. The Department of Classical Archaeology at JLU Giessen, which has already been intensively testing the use of digital interaction technologies in museum contexts and in teaching since 2018, is now also breaking new ground in research. In cooperation with the Department of Experimental Psychology, perception structures are being researched via eye tracking in a virtual reality experiment using 3D models of ancient sculptures.

  • Museum 3D – A virtual exhibition space as a DigiLab for museums and teaching [more...]

As part of the project, a virtual exhibition space will be designed that can be used as an experimental laboratory for training in the handling of objects, for method-oriented and interdisciplinary teaching formats and for the design of student exhibitions.
