Area of study

In modern culture, which is dominated by the digital media, the image is playing an important role as a bearer of communication. At the same time, since the 1980s, art has experienced a great increase in social and economic importance. So the subject art education meets challenges and areas of activity outside the school. In this regard the Master`s course provides the opportunity to focus on various topics in the framework of its specialisation areas.
This course of study is based on a broad concept of artistic education which consciously includes various aspects of theory and practice of art and education and examines the connexions between them. The immanent interdisciplinary character of artistic education is intended to have a positive effect through integration and profile-forming accentuation of the various subject areas.

Entrance requirements

  • The requirement for acceptance into the Master course is to have completed a Bachelor`s degree with a relevant subject profile (or an equivalent qualification) and a final mark of "good" or better.
  • Language skills: (proof of two languages required, equivalent to certificate required for the BA studies. More on this...)
  • Artistic aptitude test More on this...

Degree prorammes with a relevant subject profile are combined study programmes with art history as the major subject and the teaching degree for grammar school with art as the major subject.  Academic qualifications in cultural science with an emphasis on art, media science with an emphasis on art, free art and art history as well as in related areas with artistic-aesthetic elements can be accepted as equivalent. The board of examiners can also accept other courses of study as equivalent by examing them individually and as may be the case take additional relevant work experience into account.

An artistic aptitude test (portfolio test) is required. More on this...

Composition of degree programme

The Master`s course Art Education offers the opportunity of a research-based deepening and differentiation of studies. It consists of two areas: the basic area of studies totalling three modules including a practical training, and one out of three specialisation areas on offer totalling five modules. According to these three subject areas of art education students have the possibility to put their emphasis on the area of scientific discipline, teaching methods or practice. Thus, students are offered a profile formation in one of these areas in the framework of the multiple art educational course of study pertaining to accentuations with regard to research and in some degree also with a view to professional activities in the future. Such areas of activity are rendered in the specialisation area I and in the fields of extracurricular artisitic education/cultural work, free schools of arts, social establishments, establishments of youth-, adult- and senior education and are also to be found in the area of educational media (publishing houses, television, online portals). The mediation of art and visual media in the framework of museum education, adult education, exhibition concept, etc. is part of a professional focus area in the specialisation area II. In the specialisation area III qualifications beyond the traditional area of art education are acquired through the connexion of multimedia-based artistic practice and subject-scientific and subject-didactic theory.
These are important in creative professional working areas, e.g. in the area of illustration (literature), documentation (education, science), public communication (public authorities, companies, media).
