The Master's course "Nutritional Science" is a consecutive study programme, which is based on a completed and relevant Bachelor's degree. Further information about the admission can be found under "Application"

During the Master's programme, you will acquire nutritional expertise with the possibility of focusing on one specialisation area.

Nutritional Science is concerned with the basic factors of human nutrition and the analysis and evaluation of biochemical process operations in the human organism. Together with this, the composition of food and the functional effect of the components of food are analysed, whereby processing and the technological process of this production will be studied. Additionally, one aspect of the studies is national and international diet and consumer behaviour and nutritional counselling.

Composition of the Study Programme

The course of studies is composed of 20 modules:

  • 8 core modules (mandatory)
  • 8 specialisation modules (non-mandatory)
  • a written Master thesis (equivalent to 4 modules)

Half the taught modules are mandatory (core modules), the other half can be chosen from all the classes taught in the faculty or from classes conducted by other departments of the JLU Giessen (specialisation module).
Specialisation is possible through the choice of the non-mandatory modules. The course has been successfully completed when all the modules have been passed.

Master's Thesis

The thesis module provides the framework for working on the MA thesis. In the thesis the student must show that he/she is capable of working independently on an academic project.

Entrance Requirements

The entry prerequisite for a Master’s degree course is a Bachelor’s degree with a relevant subject profile.
A relevant Bachelor degree course of a German university is:

  • Nutritional Sciences

Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in Home Economics/Ecotrophology must have passed the following (or equivalent) modules:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Pathobiochemistry or Clinical Nutrition/-therapy
  • Nutritional Physiology
  • Human Nutrition
  • Vegetable Food
  • Food of Animal Origin
