Overview

The aim of the four-semester Master's programme in Physics and Technology for Space Applications (PTRA) is to offer a modern, research-oriented study programme in the field of spaceflight that addresses current as well as fundamental and application-oriented issues in order to meet the needs of research institutes, space agencies and the space industry in particular for well-trained young people in the STEM field. Today, space technology is characterised by high interdisciplinarity and ever faster development cycles. Our study programme - positioned between electrical engineering and physics - takes this into account and also offers scope for further development in the elective area. The compulsory modules are specifically designed for this degree programme and, with the modules "Fundamentals of Astronautics" and "Space Systems" in the first two semesters, offer a solid theoretical foundation for this exciting field of work. The module group "Analysis of Space Systems", "Design of Space Systems" and "Implementation of Space Systems - CubeSat", which build on each other, is practice-oriented and is intended to gradually introduce students to the planned work in large projects and contribute to the development of a real Cube-Sat mission. In-depth and specialisation modules can be individually designed and introduce students to the topic of their Master's thesis in order to guarantee a final thesis at the frontline of research.

The close cooperation between JLU and THM with DLR as a research partner and Ariane Group as a cooperation partner, as well as the many ongoing research projects with academic and industrial partners in Germany and abroad, will open the doors wide for students to enter professional life. After successful completion of the Master's programme, the future prospects are golden and the job lights are green, because the demand for interdisciplinary trained STEM graduates is huge across all high-tech fields.

Admission requirements

The following Bachelor's degree is recognised for admission to the Master's programme:

  • "Physics and Technology for Space Applications" from JLU Giessen.

The examination board may recognise other courses of study as equivalent.

 

Application

  • The degree programme is not subject to admission restrictions.
  • The enrolment period for the winter semester begins at the beginning of June.
  • The end of the enrolment period is determined anew each year, please enquire in the application portal during the enrolment period.

Industrial companies such as Airbus, OHB and Thales as well as the space agencies ESA and DLR emphasise that there is a lack of qualified young talent, especially in the field of key technology for electric space propulsion. And not only in Europe. The primary goal of the Physics and Technology for Space Applications degree programme is to train experts in this field.
