Overview

The degree programme in primary education, or 'L1' with "Islamic Religion", prepares students to teach Years 1-4 at German Grundschulen. Graduates get a teaching certificate for Years 1-6 in their particular teaching subjects.

In Germany, teacher-training policy falls within the remit of the federal states' own education authorities. Because of this, programmes of study in the different states can vary in structure and content, particularly with regard to the number, range and combinations of school subjects in which teachers are trained. For those requiring information on teacher-training degrees and comprehensive teacher-training programmes which are run in Germany as a whole, the German Education Server provides a useful website.


An interest in the chosen courses' content and in particular working with children is expected. Openess, stability and self-reflectivity are further characteristics of this profession. The variety of subjects in the teaching degree programmes demands flexibility and an interest (depending on the chosen subject) on questions concerning natural sciences, languages and arts, as well as social-  and educational sciences.

For teaching the subject Islamic religion and in order to hold denominational classes a teaching permission for the subject Religion is required (as it is the case with all other confessions).

The organisations DITIB Landesverband Hessen and Ahmadyya Muslim Jamaat in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland e.V. are recognised cooperation partners. They are authorised to give Graduates of this degree programme the permission to teach.


Prerequisites

Applicants must have an Abitur (German school leaver’s examination for university entrance) or equivalent in order to apply for teaching degree programmes leading to a state examination (NO university of applied science entrance qualification). Several subjects of the various teaching degree programmes require subject-specific prerequisites such as aptitude tests or specific language requirements. All teacher-training students must provide evidence of an orientation placement of at least four weeks' duration. This is intended as an opportunity to gain an insight into their future careers. Students should complete their orientation placement before starting their degree programme and must have done so at the latest before starting their school-based studies during the lecture-free period.

During the course certain elements are studied parallel to each other:

  • the four educational and social sciences (sociology, political science, psychology, educational science (paedagogics))
  • didactics of the primary school
  • musical-aesthetic training, movement education
  • the three following subjects:
    • German
    • Mathematics
    • Islamic Religion
  • Practical school studies, these are practice periods in the school with preparatory and feedback sessions.

Educational and Basic Sciences

The study of education and social sciences in this degree programme covers such areas as locations of education and development (e.g. family upbringing, school upbringing); learning theory; the social coexistence of pupils, parents and teachers; and the basics of democracy.

The four disciplines below are constituent parts of this degree programme because teachers are not only there to impart knowledge. It is also their duty to fulfil an important role in children's social development. In order to do this role justice, they must be able to understand and evaluate the structures and processes at play in school and in society as well as in a class and within the development of an individual pupil.

Didactics of the Primary School

In didactics (the study of teaching and learning) of the primary school you are dealing with primary school specific topics. The relevant courses take place in the area of educational science and deal with specifically primary school didactic problems which in addition to subject specific didactics, deal with topics especially relevant to the primary school.

Teaching subjects

The following teaching subjects are obligatory for all L1 students:

German (compulsory)

Students of primary education have to study the the subject German for the classes 1-6. According to the study regulations, the following areas are provided:

1. Linguistic-and literary content areas:

  • acquisition of literacy skills,
  • orthography,
  • word- and sentence grammar,
  • competent use of language in conversations and with texts,
  • reading- and writing research,
  • literary genres,
  • epochs and authors (especially children's- and youth literature);

2. Subject-related didactical concepts and methods for primary education in the following competence areas:

  • speaking- and listening,
  • writing,
  • reading and receiving (dealing with literary- and non-literary texts as well as with media),
  • investigation and reflection of language and language usage;

Mathematics (compulsory)

Students of primary education have to study the subject mathematics for the classes 1-6. According to the study regulations, the following areas are provided:

1. Subject-specific content areas:

  • numbers and operations,
  • space and form,
  • patterns and structures,
  • sizes and dimensions,
  • as well as data, frequency and probability.

2. Subject-related didactics:

General mathematical competence areas like communication, argumentation, modelling, and problem-solving are going to be revised in conjunction with the above-named content areas. This is going to be illustrated with lessons of primary school dealing with arthmetic, geometry, as well as calculations concerning practical problems.

Likewise, course contents of the classes 5 and 6 will be revised in greater detail (artimetic of natural numbers, fractions, problems formulated in text form and calculating with sizes, terms- variables- equations, and geometric elements).

Intermediate assessment for all teacher-training degrees

Intermediate assessment

In all our teacher-training degree programmes, students face intermediate assessment after the first half of the minimum duration of their studies (4th semester). This does not involve them sitting in an exam; instead, each students' intermediate grade is derived from the accumulated grades achieved in modules amounting to a specified number of credit points. In very exceptional circumstances based on valid reasons, students have the possibility to face the intermediate assessment until the end of the 6th semester.

This intermediate grade and the first school placement are intended to confirm students' aptitude for their chosen profession. It follows that continued failure to pass the intermediate assessment and the first period of school-based study by the final deadline will result in students' loss of permission to proceed with their chosen degree. The federal state government has laid the foundations for a confession-oriented Islamic religious education at the federal state schools. For teaching the subject Islamic religion and in order to hold denominational classes a teaching permission for the subject Religion is required (as it is the case with all other confessions).
