your concern

The use of digital media in university teaching can bring many advantages for lecturers and students - but often also raises new questions, especially for lecturers: What options do I have to support my teaching with digital media? What legal aspects do I have to consider? Which tools and methods are best suited to my teaching situation, my target group and my learning/teaching objectives? How much effort does the use of a certain tool mean for me - and what are the benefits for me and my students?

These are just a few of the questions you (need to) address if you want to use digital media in your teaching.
With the NIDIT Lunch Bag Session, we would like to offer you regular opportunities, starting in the summer semester of 2022, to clarify these and other questions in exchange with colleagues, to share your own experiences, and to develop new ideas together.

our offer

The NIDIT Lunch Bag Session was set up to offer you the opportunity to discuss all your questions and experiences regarding the use of digital media in university teaching in an informal atmosphere. In the new edition of the Lunch Bag Session, the staff members of the project "NIDIT - Network for Impactful Digital International Teaching Skills" will be available to give you advice and support.

The offer is meant to support you...
...to deal constructively with the use of digital media in university teaching.
...to realistically assess the advantages and disadvantages as well as the costs and benefits of using special e-learning tools.
...to reflect on and design e-learning/blended learning scenarios together with (interdisciplinary) colleagues - and, if necessary, to apply ideas from different subject areas to their own teaching practice.

  • Digitale Barrierefreiheit / Digital accessibility (with Dr Steffen Puhl)

Digitally supported teaching and learning always means new challenges for teachers and students, but at the same time it also offers numerous opportunities for participatory and inclusive participation in order to make teaching more accessible. Dr Steffen Puhl, Coordinator for Accessible Study Information Systems and Inclusive IT at the University Computer Center at JLU Giessen, will demonstrate what is important, for example, in the accessible design of learning videos, PowerPoint presentations and digital documents so that they are also accessible and usable for students with impairments. We would like to sensitize you to "invisible" hurdles in everyday teaching that students may encounter and show you how to recognize and avoid digital and didactic barriers in web and e-learning offerings.

  • Erklärvideos in der Hochschullehre / Explanation videos in higher education teaching (with Roman Henke)

Explanation videos allow complex information to be presented in a short, concise and visually appealing way. Explainer videos are short videos that present content using drawings, animations and images. The use of explanation videos in university teaching is diverse. As an alternative to presentations or as part of student lectures, university lecturers themselves can activate and reach, reuse and reproduce their plenary through the targeted use of explanation videos. Using the browser-based software VYOND as an example, we demonstrate how explanation videos can be designed, what needs to be taken into account during production, what options are available in the design of explanatory videos, and we discuss how they can be used didactically in teaching.

  • International Teaching Networking (with Dr Annika Brück-Hübner and Richard Vargas)

This lunchbag-session provides an overview about support offers, practical advice, and information on international teaching networking. To this aim, participants will discuss possibilities to get in contact with teachers from other countries to initiate common international and digital teaching projects. In addition, this session also affords opportunities for further networking among attendees through professional exchange rounds in small groups.

  • Virtual Reality und Augmented Reality in der Hochschullehre / Virtual reality and augmented reality in higher education teaching (with Maraike Büst and Ramin Siegmund)
Virtual reality and augmented reality offer numerous possibilities for university teaching. Whether as a supplement to face-to-face teaching or as an immersive and fully comprehensive virtual course, the new technology offers a wide range of applications. What is the difference between virtual reality and augmented reality? Where is the technology already being used in higher education and what are the advantages for my own teaching concept? We will test various VR headsets and applications on site in our LAB for Innovative Teaching in Giessen and would like to offer enough space for your own experiences.
