Content and methods

Promoting Learning in the International Classroom, 22/03/2018

The first part of the workshop focuses on the general question of what our roles as university teachers are and how we as teachers can motivate students and promote learning in the international classroom. We will first get to know the Constructive Alignment framework (Biggs & Tang 20114) as our basis and learn how to apply a taxonomy of learning outcomes to our teaching contexts. In addition, we will identify strategies on how to motivate student learning (and how not to) and get to know methods that encourage active learning in the classroom.

In the second part of the workshop, we will focus more specifically on the special context of teaching in a multilingual, multicultural classroom environment. We will identify and discuss the various shapes of diversity in such classrooms and reflect on the interplay with the local learning culture. An analysis of potential challenges for teachers and students will be our starting point to devise first ideas on how to leverage diversity in our (future) teaching contexts.

Methods

The workshop will consist of facilitator input and group output based on individual, pair and group work activities. A variety of different didactic methods will be used in order to provide participants with first-hand experience of these methods for potential later use in their classrooms.

Objectives

Participants will learn to

  • reflect on their role as (future) university teachers in an international learning environment
  • apply the constructive alignment framework and a taxonomy of learning outcomes to their teaching contexts
  • devise strategies and get to know methods to promote student motivation and encourage active learning
  • reflect on the various shapes of diversity in the international English-taught classroom and on the role of the local learning culture.
  • foresee potential challenges for students and teachers in an international environment and devise strategies on how to leverage diversity.

Target group

This workshop is open to doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers seeking to learn more about teaching in English. Previous teaching experience (in any language) is a useful advantage, but not required.

Course language

English

Please note: As this is not an English language course, a C1 level of English language competency is required.

Lecturing and Interacting with Students in an International Classroom, 23/03/2018

The workshop will be divided into two major parts: lecturing and interacting with students

Lecturing will address the following:

  • Meta-factors (transparent communication of structure and learning objectives) for lecturing
  • Use of signposts to help guide students through a lecture
  • Brief analyses of lecture clips

Interacting with students will address the following:

  • Use of micro-methods and questions to activate students
  • Didactical methods to apply when responding to 4 categories of student input
  • Brief simulations of student interaction

Methods

The workshop will consist of facilitator input and group output via pair work, group work, and some brief simulations. We will also view clips of authentic teaching scenarios and analyze these.

Objectives

Which outcomes can be expected by the participants?

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Apply lecturing techniques to ease the cognitive load for students learning in a foreign language
  • Identify numerous micro-methods one can use in a lecture setting and give clear instructions to facilitate them
  • Describe the benefit of explicit questions and signposts in lectures
  • Identify communicative strategies to apply when responding to student input

Target group

Workshop is open to doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers seeking to learn more about teaching in English. As academia internationalizes, more and more courses are offered in English. This workshop aims to better equip tomorrow’s teachers in academia who will be expected to teach in English. Previous teaching experience is a plus but not required.

Course language

English

Please note: As this is not an English language course, proficiency in English at the C1 level of competency is required.

Please note
