The Chair for Industrial Organization, Regulation and Antitrust, VWL I, of the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen organizes a
Workshop on the Economics of Fixed Book Price Systems (14.11. - 15.11.2019)
The goal of the workshop is an economic assessment of the book market. The topics to be discussed include book quality and variety, the industry structure in general and the substitutability between the online and offline sales channel from the viewpoint of the consumers. A special emphasis will be placed on the analysis of fixed book price systems, which can generally be seen as a form of Resale Price Maintenance (RPM). There is no general consensus among competition economists regarding the efficiency effects of RPM. The resulting uncertainty about the legal treatment of RPM in the book market is exacerbated by the fact that books can be characterized as horizontally and vertically differentiated experience goods.
To discuss all these topics, the workshop brings together researchers, competition experts and practitioners.
Speakers and Panelists
Joel Waldfogel (University of Minnesota), Christos Genakos (University of Cambridge), Paul Crosby (Macquarie University Sydney), Achim Wambach (Monopolies Commission, ZEW). Further participants will be announced shortly.
If you would like to present your own research, please submit an extended abstract or a full paper here.
Data and Collaboration
Our team has put together a data set containing sales and price data for the German speaking countries’ book markets. Currently, we are in the process of extending the data base for other countries. We are interested to address as many relevant research questions with this unique data base as possible and invite researchers to collaborate. We are happy to provide additional information on request. Please feel free to contact us.
Registration is open now. Participation is free of charge. However, the number of participants is limited to 100 persons.
The workshop is funded by Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, the German booksellers' and publishers' association and organizer of the Frankfurt Book Fair.
